A couple of upgrade queries

Right, suspension / geo sorted, wheels and tyres sorted, remap sorted, I’m now looking at flywheel and gearchange, but have a couple of queries.
First flywheel, I find way the car revs a bit frustrating and have been considering the 9m MWFW, but keep thinking that I’ll regret not fitting a pukka RS LWFW, a long shot but has anybody experienced both?
I’d also like to fit the RS short shift, but the info I’ve seen states that it is a bit taller than the stock lever, any idea if I can still utilise the stock gear knob and gaiter?
Thanks chaps

a LWFW helps but not exactly earth shattering

A short shift has no impact on the gear level, a must have mod

what did you end up eeking out on the remap?

The Porsche short shift gear stick is about an inch taller than the standard stick, the standard boot will look a little taught, the tequipment and RS boots have extra material to cater for this.

My early C2 didn’t like the LWFW, i had stalling and loud gear chatter, even with a Steve Wong chip fitted, went back to a DMF. Other experiences vary, especially with a properly dynoed chip. I’ve heard very good things about MWFW, but no personal experience.

The Porsche short shift is like Gwsinc says, easy enough to take some off the top though!

LWFW is great for road use on a Sunday, not if you are in traffic.

Positive experience in my case for the RS shift, the small change in height is a positive for me. I tried the MWFW and couldn't get away with noise which occurred significantly with my car in 4,5 and 6 th and made motorway driving a bit unpleasant. Reverted to DMFW and never regretted it, even when using the car regularly on track.

Never noticed the gear chatter on mine when over 2500 ish, the payback at stand still and pulling away is worth it for me but I dont drive in traffic

I recently got a MWFW fitted and on my particular car the gear noise has increased significantly at medium revs and high load.

The plus side is that the engine feels more lively; quicker to build and loose revs, heal & toe gear changes are improved and (weirdly) it is easier to drive in stop-start traffic as the pickup is much better and it stalls less. Top end it also seems happier to rev out. I would say that before the overall powertrain felt refined but a bit lazy. I have a ChipsWizard map on my car and it’s a vario.

However, the increase in gearbox noise is significant and just where you don’t want it for general everyday driving; ie when you are using the torque of the engine to make decent progress rather than revving the engine out. However, I’ve decided (for now) to live with it and I’m gonna add back a bit of sound insulation (I presently have none) to see if it helps.

The trouble is that it’s pot-luck on how noisy your gearbox will be with either a MWFW or LWFW, as it’s all down to what clearances and backlashes you have in your drivetrain and everyone’s car will be different. Also depends a lot on how refined you want your car to be as 993 owners seem to cover the whole spectrum.

My advice would be to drive or passenger in a few modded cars to see if the noise is bearable, as it’s an expensive mod to do.

Thanks chaps, the flywheel is a dilemma, I’d really like the car to be freer revving, and could cope with a little noise particularly if you could drive around it, I’m in rural west wales, so city driving isn’t really an issue, and I was hoping to create a sort of civilised RS

I have noticed since changing to different gear shifter and rubber boot there is a noticeable increase in transmission noise since fitting.

Just ordered FD Motorsport short shift along with Numeric Racing adjustable shift rod, could be this weekends job as due to arrive this Friday.

Surely the route is goldenrod + short shift kit, I think I got both from FD Motorsport. Great feel.

Really surprised and a somewhat puzzled reading your experiences, which are notably different to my experience on the 'noise' front as found here: https://911uk.com/threads/9m-ninemeister-mid-weight-flywheel-for-993-964.118457/page-2#post-1398691.

Whether going for the LWFW or MWFW I think one has to adjust their driving accordingly, i.e. if you labour the engine at 50mph in 6th and seek to accelerate without changing gears you will likely hear some chatter (how much appears to be variable).

There is probably a lot of truth in this.

For our C4 cars, totally. For C2, Numeric appears to be a very interesting option:

We can all only speak to our experience and the vagaries of our cars at their current level of wear and tear. Mine with the MWFW was intolerable in the case of typical acceleration for me, for example in sixth accelerating from 60 plus for motorway overtaking which for me is part of having a versatile car in the 993. It's a mixture I'm sure of both personal tolerance and the individual car ... I use mine regularly on track, so it's a car that does get some hard use over the full range of performance, but I don't want a car that isn't good to cruise... The rattle with MWFW on mine, just sounded like it was going to damage something and the benefit of a faster accelerator blip (which ironically makes heal and toe less easy on track) and maybe a very small lower gear feel of peppyness was just not worth it. But that's the beauty of these, we can all mod to our hearts content and find what we like.

HI Solstice

Has the remap not affected the way the car revs? In what way is it disappointing you? Out of gear throttle response, or pickup from idle in gear, or slow to decay on down changes, or other?

What engine mounts are you running?

All the best
