997 Turbocharger Refurb/Upgrade - Best Option

Hi All,

Mentioned before but my driver's side turbocharger needs a refurb owing to an oil leak. I'll likely attempt removal myself, then probably give up and give it to someone else but while I'm planning that I was trying to work out options I have for the repair. Clearly I'll get both sides done. But I'm a little stuck on what to do and how to get the best from the car without compromising anything.

I'll likely use Turbo Dynamics as they seem to be the recommended place, but they have a myriad of options. I could just do a simple refurb, get them good as new and off we go.

Or, I could perhaps look at some small upgrades. I am running DO88 intercoolers (GT2 size) and Y-pipe. plus Kline 200cel Cats and Silencer so I was thinking a small upgrade to the Turbo would perhaps be a good complementary mod. The GT2 spec turbo has a larger compressor wheel for example, and cropped turbine fins which are both services offered by Turbo Dynamics. What I am looking for is slightly better driveability, a little more torque and no increase in turbo lag (or even a slight improvement?). I'm not looking for big power, the GT2 numbers are fine, which is about 520ps.

I think I need to map the car anyway having had the exhaust upgraded only last month, so what to do with the turbos is a big part in that journey as I'll do them first, and the map would be the final piece if needed.

To be clear, I have no interest in massive power hikes, it's fast enough already. The map is more to optimise the new set up from the faster flowing exhaust within which the turbo set up is going to be a key component.

Thanks
Paul

it's worth getting a remap for sure
no experience of Turbo Dynamics

I have used turbo dynamics for some stage 2 turbos on my old b5 rs4.

They were perfect , good company.

I used them too for a hybrid turbo rebuild on a Fiat Coupe. They were great.

I spoke to them last year about rebuild of 997t units and they seemed very knowledgeable. Likely the way I’ll go if I need a refresh in the future.
