Guys,

Are gen 1 997's supposed to blow out a puff of smoke from both exhausts on start up, after a few seconds is smokes reduces and disappears, is this normal?

not so far...

It is normal. I just bought one and took mine back to the dealer because of this and they said its normal. As far as I can remember they said there is overflow for the turbo lube that enters the exhaust sometimes and that's what you see.

Normal, and almost guaranteed if you leave a week between drives.

You won't be surprised to hear people who reverse out of their garage notice this more.

It's not a bug it's a feature which is based on the construction of a boxer engine. So don't worry.

Mine has done the same and was getting a little worried as I have only had it a couple of months.

Does seem to be more likely to happen if I haven't driven it for a while and it is parked up a curb.

I thought I had covered this, but then I re-read "curb".

I now have vision of a 997 Turbo bumped up the curb, and abandoned at the side of the road for weeks on end

I am sure airport parking isn't that bad!

Mines not a 997 but a 996 turbo and also smokes :bandit:

Although that is true, and all boxers will do this to an extent, the true answer is that it is the SAME engine.

The GT1 blocks have a particular propensity to valve seepage due to their design.

(this is perfectly normal and harmless)
