997 Servicing

Not according to the blurb in the brochure-opc only need to see the car once every 2 years

Nice to know - but I think the upgrade to a 997 would cost more than I will save on servicing!

Going to be interesting to see what these extended oil drain times have on the long term reliability of the engines. For the price of an oil change, which does not have to be done by an OPC then I would go for a minimum of annual change - even on full sythetic oil.

It would seem sensible to have at least an oil change a year - I know guys on other forums who do them themselves every six months!

That is probably taking it a bit far, but, heh, it got to be good for the car.

Most 997 owners won't be keeping long-term, so won't give a tinker's fart about more frequent oil changes in the interest of longevity...

But frequent oil changes a good idea, say every 5-8000 miles. Which is maybe once a year for most of us Porker owners on here.

I guess it depends on the mileage. My 87 3.2 has done about 4000 miles since last oil change (last May) and the stuff is still pure golden (Mobil 1), not a hint of cack in it. I would imagine that these modern synthetics are quite capable of doing 2 years work quite happily without any adverse affects.

If the car was older, then maybe I would be more concerned.

Obviously not having owned a 997, so I have no experience this is all guess work.

Mark.

Porsche might say once every 20,000 miles but they are assuming the conditions you drive you car are not too extreme ie not extreme cold or hot or humid etc further they assume that you don't thrash your GBP 60,000 or GBP 70,000 car (when new at least) all day long, you don't sit in three hours of traffic everyday and stop and start 10 times a day.

Personally I have the oil changed every 7,000 miles or so - get the once over on everything etc.

Absolutely! I handwash my car every two weeks - minimum - the interior is always spotless - no food allowed!!!! I had a spill of some coffee in one of my cars which also had a beige interior back in 1999 learnt my lesson then!

BTW regarding 20K oil changes, I know from having my VW serviced [which also has 2 year/20K mile service intervals] that they use a different [i.e. they charge you more] long-life oil; they also warned me not to top up this long-life oil with standard oil.

It may be a totally different setup with Porsche for the 997 but thought I'd mention it.

Its a very valid point you make.My car rarely used and when I came to add a little oil the other day I saw there was condensation in the oil filler pipe(thought the head gasket had gone at first but was told that some condensation is normal on little used cars)I would have said that even small ammounts of moisture will not do engine internals any good.

Another point to make is that when you look on other forums such as rennlist,American owners do change their oil more frequently, but the cost of doing so is about half what we would pay in the UK(labour and the oil itself)

Also as has already been pointed out,911 owners in this country do not tend to keep the cars for the long term anyway,I read somewhere that on average any uk 911 changes hands once a year!!
