After selling my 996 c4s a year or so ago and then running an RS4 for a while I've never really lost the 911 feeling and there is only one I want to get back into,, a 997 gen 1 GT3. Let's be honest here, Gen 1 because I can't afford gen 2 !

I have lots of questions but I suppose the first one is around values and time to buy, my RS4 goes a week today so technically I am in a position to buy now, but am in no rush.

I wondered what peoples advice on when to buy is, I was thinking there might be more available in the winter time out of track day season and what is the experts opinions on the availability looking like when the new 991 gt3 comes out. I think the first of those cars start to go out Oct / Nov ?

Thoughts welcome

I posted on the other thread that this time of year the prices harden and availability dries up. If you are not in a hurry I would wait till the winter where there will be loads more than now to choose from and the prices will be lower. This will also give you ample time to peruse the ads and get a feel for the market and whats available. If one pops up that fits the bill then you will be in a position to know whether its a good deal or not and less prone to your heart overtaking your head :hand:

I got mine in early Jan and as such got a cracking price because the market was low and the dealer had been sitting on it a while so wanted it gone.

No one truly knows what affect the new 991 GT3 will have on values of older cars but if you wait you`ll find that out too. Personally I dont think it will make much difference as the new one is restricted availability and well over £100k so cant compete with a £55k 07 plate car. But who knows ?

Things to check are the usual : Condition and provenance aswell as services and PCCB`s if so fitted.

Agree there, I often talk to clients about timing of track weapon purchases. Yes there will be more hitting the market late autumn but most of those will still be around in the new year - at which point the seller/dealer is fed up. When spring hits the prices harden again.

Surely though it is not so much a case of 997 GT3 Mk I owners going straight to the 991 GT3 as 997 GT3 Mk II (~£90k) trading up and then Mk I owners going to the Mk II :dont know: . A bit like musical chairs. The only difference being the 991 is more of a chair with wheels, or perhaps a stool  .

Obviously some will be squirreled away like the 996 GT3 RS. Where are they now?

You might save some money buying the winter but I've bought in the spring and been more than happy. I don't really think it makes a lot of difference to price. Add to that the fact you are not driving the car for the next six months...so i would say you are losing out on fun seat time, only you know the value of that.

From following GT3 prices for over 7 years I reckon that peak to trough is about 10% through the year with early to mid December the lowest for price and early summer the peak. Well priced cars can of course pop up any time though, but if that is genuinely the case someone else will usually have money reserving them if you wait a few days.

I don't think that the new car will in itself have an effect on values, but do consider that the first deliveries will hit the road at the time of year when prices are traditionally at their lowest so it might to some seem like it.

If you were trading to the new car via trade in with a dealer, the cost to change from a 997.2 GT3 will be (according to my numbers - as an owner of course I ran them) approximately £45-50k depending upon specification (trading the dealer margin at the bottom of the market). Even a 3.8RS owner would need to throw £20-30k into the bucket to get into a cooking 991GT3 so frankly I really don't see them having any effect on residuals of the older cars.

What they may do (however) is add perhaps as many as a dozen more than usual decent well looked after cars to the supply this winter (at the seasonally low price) thereby making it a good time to buy. But as Danny said - if you were to hold out for that you have lost the thick end of a year of your life without a GT3 in it. So if you wait, make damn sure that you have an epic summer :thumb:

Very interesting to read, cheers for the insights.

I'm planning on going on holiday until one appears :thumb:

(I can't really)
