Hi all,

I have had a 996 for 10 years (currently in the for sale section) and looking to move to a 997 but on a budget. Seen a couple of 997's for around £20k, 3.6 & 3.8.

Naturally I will have a solid look around and maybe employ a 3rd party but I think my main questions are:

3.6 / 3.8 - The 3.8s do feel pokier and I like the option of the sports suspension setting (which was an option I know on the 3.6) - are there any major advantages / disadvantages in terms of servicing / reliability?

I have seen an excellent looking 3.8 with 100k on the clock with FSH and a 3.6 (basic spec) with 49k on the clock. Visually and driving they both feel totally 100%.

I am not put off by the miles as I have taken my 996 to 120 relatively trouble-free.

Is a high mileage 997 to be avoided or just with caution?

And, one last minor point - can a factory Sat Nav be retro-fitted fairly easily and cost-effective?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to moving forums soon!

No major advantages/disadvantages between these variants. Servicing on the 3.8 might cost marginally more but that's about it really.

Buy on caution. In any case have the engine checked for any bore scoring (do a search on the 997 forum) and see that it has had a full OPC or reputable Indie service history. Between these two examples you have quoted, I could be more tempted by the 3.6.

Easily, yes, cost-effectively, no.

At that mileage buy on condition. Provenance, Full Porsche Dealer/Specialist service history, bodywork etc are important. Even better if it's owned by a Porsche enthusiast. Most importantly have it inspected. If the engine suffers from any of the known issues then you can try and renegotiate some of the asking price to reflect this and then have it refurbed. You'll then be good for some mileage.
