I have spent some considerable amount of time tinkering with exhaust options for my 997.2 C2 and i thought it may be worth putting it all down on here in one place for future members to read.
AIM - More noise from a quiet car.
CENTRE MUFFLER DELETE. I opted for a TopGear one, couldn't see any real benefit for me to go for anything more expensive. Quite easy to fit once you get them damn bolts off, i replaced them all with stainless ones, M8. The result was a better grunt, not very noticeable to be honest but it did make a difference for a small outlay.
GUNDO HACK & CENTRE MUFFLER DELETE. I used a 1.5" pipe to connect between the inlet and outlet pipes. The result was a far better noise output and some crackles as you let off the gas. Howls about 5000rpm, town driving was nice and nothing too loud. In my garage the dB averaged from cold start to settling down 90.4.
DESIGNTEK VALVETRONIC BOXES AND CENTRE MUFFLER DELETE - I thought i'd get a better noise using dedicated valved boxes rather than a gundo hack. The result was a quieter, more refined tone that wasn't noticeable until you open the car up and get past 4000 / 5000rpm. It wasn't as throaty and had no crackles. You could hear the engine induction over the exhaust tone with this setup once in the higher rev ranges.
SIDE MUFFLER DELETE AND CENTRE MUFFLER DELETE. This was putting a smile on my face, oh boy it sounded well. It did have cabin drone when you labored the engine, say below 2500rpm and applying gas, and it would become tiresome if you didn't avoid that kind of range. It had a nice sound throughout all the rev range, so at low speed cruising you could hear the engine unlike any other combination i had tried that needed opened up to hear things.
OUTCOME - I kept the side and centre muffler delete, and have the DesignTek boxes as a back up for when i get sick of it. Yes it is loud, but to be honest i have sat outside and witnessed my car go past and it isn't ASBO in my opinion. You can happily cruise along and hear nothing, but open it up and it barks to life. Being a weekend car i want to have a feel good factor when i'm driving it and this setup ticks the boxes for me, plus i don't thrash my car all the time as i've got young kids so this was my favored install.
