997.1 Buying advice (borescore!)

I think having a feel for a car is vital.
If you drive off not wanting to be in it, regardless of price, it’s not the car for you.
Our subconscious knowledge is far greater than our conscious knowledge and something is telling you this isn’t the 997 you want as a keeper.

That one with the paint issues... How bad? And would a machine polish / mop sort it out for the most part?

See my post above here:

the NS Wing has these scratches under the paint, i can only assume over time the paint has sunk into the the prepped surface and these scratches are now showing through.

Therefore id say the NSR Wing and bonnet need respray. So i guess £1500 to make good, with a buff over the rest.

Mechanically it seems ok including all water hoses replaced. However i noticed the Chrono clock has no power.

That's the reality with a 20+ year old car right? It's more of a rolling restoration I'd think.... That's how I see it.

Perfect paint is going to be hard to find with any sort of miles on the clock? Or check out the machine painted VW's and Volvo and be shocked at how bad the paint is from the factory ;)

I think you’re too fussy given that these cars are coming up to 20 years old. It looks like you want concourse but don’t want to pay concourse money. Your budget is £25k but you want rebuild, clear borescope, perfect paintwork, lowish mileage, good service history and an owner that will indulge you by accepting your offer, not the asking price. In other words you’re looking for a unicorn in what is the secondhand car market for old cars.

Good luck with your search but make sure you don’t get lulled in by the trinkets and shiny baubles and miss out on the good cars.
You're absolutely right and that's the beauty of forums, sometimes! People not concerned about what they say so much, and i appreciate the frank opinion, and on the back of hearing yesterday a good friend from years back passed away last week, a healthy fit chap in his early 50's went to bed feeling a bit off, didn't wake in the morning gone.

So on the back of that i thought fck it, just buy the car i liked it alot, hell if i have to get a few panels resprayed i had 3k knocked off asking what more could i ask for...oh ok can i have a Hartge rebuild chucked in please? ;)

So i am arranging delivery tomorrow, this thread has somewhat digressed so apologies to people reading it looking for more bore score info most of that is the first few pages of excellent advice from readers here. Hoping my next thread isn't on Borescore again! Will post a new thread with my car as an intro.

Thankyou to all of you on here offering advice so far. Be nice to meet some of you maybe one day.

Congratulation indeed! Well done and I'm sure you'll enjoy it immensely!

As you say, things can happen in a moment so putting things off until the situation is just right means it's unlikely to ever happen. I bought mine under a similar auspice - I'd be hankering after a sports car of some sort again after a children enforced hiatus, and kept telling myself it's an indulgence and really should be sensible... But after a weekend at the Goodwood Revival I'd realised I really am a petrol-head and to just do it and enjoy.

I look now and I could have got a better car for cheaper (probably? maybe?), but then I'd have not been driving one for the last 3 and a half years. And chances are, anything else I'd have got would have needed work done (front coolant pipes, tandem pump, AOS, brakes, disc, brake lines etc...), so I'd have missed out for some years and still be playing catch up on the jobs that needed to be done.

Enjoy it!!

Good point.

You should be able to bore score cylinders 6 and 5 within 30 minutes.

Give yourself another hour to do number 4. 😁

But if 6 and then 5 is clear I would call that a win.

I bought a Seal Grey 997.1 S a couple of months back, it had had an engine rebuild done through Autowerke in Norwich and the heads were sent off to AMS to be relined last year, 4k miles ago. That was nearly £13k and while it was out the guy did brake lines, coolant lines and a couple of other bits, taking the total to closer to £16k.
The guy bought the car in late 2022, they saw the bore score during their PPI and the car was on a sale or return from a buyer who bought a Cayman GTS from them. The seller just said if it needs to be done then it needs to be done.

The guy I bought it off just didn't get on with it. He had a Mustang V8 and old V8 stag and said although he had always wanted one, it just wasn't what he liked to drive. Oh, and he had an extension project that was costing a fortune. Haha

I must admit, when I drove it home it was raining and felt a bit off, very light up front, very twitchy and I was just preying that it just needed a geo set up and new tyres.

It needed new front tyres, Bridgestone Sports on the rear and RE050 on the front that were 7 years old, so new fronts went on. New control arms up front too, and I took it for geo.
The geo was so out, toe out up front, no toe in on the rear, only 0.05 toe on on the rear, no wonder it felt so edgy.

Now absolutely sorted.

I did actually check bore 6 todayas it is using some oil, had to put in 1/2 a litre again today after only 1200 miles, but that did include some Autobahn and fast European shenanigans. It is all fine.

The seller did say that he never takes it past 5k rpm, just didn't feel the need. I wish he had. I'm of the mindset that a new engine needs to be revved properly to help oil consumption throughout its life. Something I will have to live with. I guess 1/2 a litre every 1200-1500 miles is not the end of the world. Just my last one used 1/2 a litre every 4k miles or more.

The one thing I will say is you forget how little friction there is on a new engine, it just feels like it wants to rev, I had to go through the paperwork to make sure there was not a lightweight flywheel, it feels that free revving. I know it doesn't have as no noise and the revs don't drop quite that quick when you dip the clutch. But I did have to see what clutch was fitted as it did have me thinking something was different.

My car (now) has 73000 miles on it, have done 2000 miles this month, it is pretty close to mint, interior is spotless too. Even after the tyres, fitting PCCM Plus, control arms, tyres and a couple of other little bits the car owes me......let's just say under more than £25k and less than £30k.

I could have bought a 997.2 PDK for the same money, I was offered one, but I really like the pre DFI engines and one with a rebuild in such mint condition was a no brainer. My wife however, really likes it, and wishes I had bought a PDK car, but I would want to swap. I thought about it briefly, but after the last couple of weeks I have fallen for it big time.

In summary, keep looking, they are great, but don't over pay, they are out there at good prices.
Just wondering why you didn't go to Hartech - I am doing research on getting a rebuild so maybe you can point me in some further directions to research.

Because it was already done.

I know a few owners who have had their cars rebuilt through Autowerke in Norwich, I think they send the heads off to AMS anyway. But regardless of that I am fairly local to them and so know a few people who have had it rebuilt with them and have put on some serious miles since with no issues at all.

If I was doing it myself would I use Hartech?
Yeah. Them or AMS. Mainly for resale value, or rather an easier sale as many seem to think it is Hartech or nothing.

But I had no problem buying a car that had been done by them, because I know guys who have already.
