996 Turbo - Replacement Actuators

One of my Actuators was found to have a broken (corroded) rod today while the car was in for an oil change. Its been patched up temporarily (welded) but I want to source the replacements and get both replaced.

I'm looking for a little help as to what replacements are recommended, standard OPC parts, design 911 parts, Forge motorsport parts?

Is this also an opportunity to do a spot of upgrading? When I look at the Actuators on the Design 911 site, I see they also sell different springs. What else would I need to increase boost if I wanted to go down that path, new wastegates, diverter valves and hoses? Forgive my ignorance, never owned a turbo car before so not looked or researched previously into turbos.

Whatever I do, standard or non standard, do I need to get the turbos calibrated after fitting the actuators or is it just a case of fitting the replacement parts and all is good?

Unless your running higher boost, stick with std. The STD rods are robust and miles better than the forge rods.

15 mins to fit per side. Any decent garage can do this(easy)

I have a single, complete new std porsche actuator assembly for 90 quid. What side is broken?
 
I'm not running higher boost at the moment, and not really bothered about increasing it, was just wondering if now was the time to consider.

The failed Actuator is the nearside, but the offside is also corroded quite badly so I want to replace both.

I am no expert on this matter, but if I were in yuor shoes, I would give Mike a call at Sports & Classic in Knutsford. He really knows these cars and especially the Turbo models inside out and will give you accurate and honest advice. There is a bewildering array of kit out there but he always cuts through the chase with me to explain in simple terms what is required and why and on that basis we agree a way to take things forward.
 
My post was simply to suggest speaking with Mike - I know he does a repair but Igurisu has stated he can do a repair himself but there are other questions he has posed. I suspect getting stright to someone who knows the issues with turbos is likely to save time and effort trying to find out what's likely to be wrong and what options exist to put things right.
 
Do yourself a favour and decide to have the car remapped :thumb:

On a relevant note, I don't think you would need upgraded actuators if you ever decided to just simply remap your car, you would however probably need to upgrade your F-Pipe and Diverter Valves, the F-pipe connects to the diverter valves. Therefore you could stick to oem actuators.

When people go after a bit more power they change the actuators to 1bar units.

Boost hoses are hit and miss, some say do it, some say not necessary. I'm running 1.3 bar through standard hoses with no issues.
 
I believe a lot of tuners keep the standard actuator but upgrade the spring to cope with higher pressure. I've read quite a few bad reports of the aftermarket actuators like Forge. So I'd stick with standard (or updated spring standard).

Weather permitting tomorrow I'll get the car jacked up (on my new SGS racing jack), and take a better look. I'm still not 100% familiar with the actuators.

So I'm considering 3 potential courses of action so far,

1. Replace the actuators.
2. Give S&C a call about repairing/replacing the rods (the waste gates are fine, not siezed).
3. Make some new stainless rods myself and fit myself. We have a toolroom at work I can use to make the rods, I haven't figured out yet how the rod screws into the actuator itself (because I haven't taken one off and pulled it to bits).

My thinking is if its only the rod that actually needs replacing it should be a fairly simple job.

BTW, if anybody has a junk actuator they could let me have (I'll cover postage), that would help tremendously.
