Hi
I'd just like to share the issues I've had with my rear spolier and hopefully this will help others if they have problems.
My problem first came to light when the spoiler went up at an angle and brought the spoiler failure alarm up on the dash.
I opened the boot lid to find a hydraulic leak of some discription coming from the middle of the plastic cover which holds the fan etc. I wasn't fully aware at the time but I gathered from a visual inpection that there was some sort of device that drives the rams which moves the spoiler up and down under this cover.
I removed the cover and had a look a the unit and drained the oil, cleaned up the unit and inspected. Unit had April 2009 on it so its obviously been replaced before as car is 2003.
Connected to the unit is the 2 hoses which go to each ram. Banjo bolts hold the hose end place with a copper washer on each side. I gathered after draining the oil that there was very liitle volume stored in the motor/pump unit. I went to halfordsand bought some CHF 11S fluid which is commenly used for cab hoods etc and used this to fill the pump which has 2 separate reservoirs(one for each hose and ram).
Refitted and all working of however I suspected the leak was coming from one of the hose connections on the pump so I thought it would be best to replace the copper washers.
Phoned up local Porsche dealer and can't buy just washers as it comes as a kit with the 2 hoses and 4 banjo bolts. £235 thank you. 2 Words. Poke it!
Oh and £625+vat for the pump unit. I just measured the washers and got some from local motor trade supplier.
I fitted the washers, refilled the reservoirs but did it work eh no! Was confused as the motor seemed to attempt at turning but rams wouldn't move.
Regardless of what you might think there is no obvious way to bleed this system as suspected this was the issue so I removed the the unit and the hose ends from the rams (you will need a 12mm spanner grinded down to remove the banjo bolts from the rams).
I filled a container full of the fluid and submerged the hose ends in it. I then connected the motor to a jump start unit.
The motor started turning and ran for about ten seconds or something like that and then stopped. I had connected positive(red) and negative(black) to the way it came of the car. ( you can't connect it wrong on the car as the connections are different sizes.
I swapped the connections over on the motor from the pack and again ran for about ten seconds then stopped but this time air was displaced out in the container. I done this a few times back and forward and then refitted to the car.
One key point to note is that it seems the motor/pump will only run so far in the one direction and that the motor connected to the jump start pack(+12V) turns the unit in reverse. You need to swap the connections to what you would think would be reverse polarity to run the motor in the forward direction. This would suggest to me that the car uses a negative DC voltage to operate the motor(someone would need to clarify this).
So before I refitted I ensure I ran the motor in reverse just before it it the stop.
Unit was refitted with no real issues, the only thing I had to do was disconnect the hoses from the pump reserviors a couple of times to top up with fluid. To bleed any air from the system after refitting to the car I just cracked the banjo bolts at each ram.
System now working and hopefully not cause me anymore grief and problem solving.
