996 to 997

The 992 maybe, but I can't see how anyone can claim an extra 56 mm (2.2") in length and no increase in width makes a 991 "slightly bloated" compared to a 997.

Because you're comparing dimensions and not looking at the cars. 991 is a fatty compared to the slimmer looking 997.

the 991 is also lower than the 997 so it could be argued it's 'under-height' not 'over-weight'. A bit like me -------- I have the perfect BMI for someone who's 6ft 9". ;)

A picture speaks a thousand words....

I'm biased, but for me the 997.1 is brilliant from a design perspective.
I have a 4S manual coupe and really like it.
I appreciate the 964 as a clean yet classic upright headlamp 911, the 993 as a curvy classic evolution and the 996 as a design cousin of the GT1... I don't have ownership experience after the 997, but have owned the 964, 993, 996 (GT3 CS). They've all been great cars for different reasons.
My 964 was used by Porsche as part of a 911 display when the 997 was launched, which is quite a nice memory now I'm a 997 owner.
It's great that I've made memories with every car.

I love these side profile pictures showing all the variants. Funny how the two that are most similar to each other are the 996 and the 997.

That's true - in profile like that. However the profile doesn't show the better curves of the 997. These curves make a significant difference - it's not just the headlights. The 996 (I owned one for 9 years, from 2002) is a bit 'slab-sided'.

I saw a reference earlier today saying the '996 soap bar looks'. Knew exactly what it meant.

I do like to bring one of my favs in to any curvy 911 topic........Kelly Brook was like a 996 in her younger years, then she matured into the stunning 996 C4s. As the years have rolled by, she's now in her 40s and a 992.

Remind me again what 40 is in Roman numerals?

Be rude to not post a photo

You're making a strong case for the 992. And I don't even like the car.

On a more serious note, I really don't think the 993 aged well. Were money no object, I'd get a 964 in jubileum purple. But as someone else said, money is an object.

To sum it up:
-the 996 is an underrated car because of its looks
-the 997.1 is a bit of an overrated car because of its looks
-the 997.2 bring a lot of changes, some good (reliability) some bad (less involvement)

OP - keep your 996. Replacing a sorted 996 with a non-rebuilt 997.1 means potentially big expenses for a limited evolution.
