Hi - I don't want to start another 'Tips are slow, manuals are great' type debate, but I've been told by a 996 tip owner that they can actually be better on fuel than a manual? Any comments on that?

On a related subject, another guy reckoned that tips chewed through more tyres than a manual? I would have thought it would be the other way round??

There are many variables, on pure torque-converter losses, the extra weight and the one less forward gear ratio, the claim is unlikely (and indeed show as such in official consumption figures).

However, there is at least one way autos could below economical: leave in auto mode and it will default to the highest gear available when not under load. A manual driver may forget, or not realise they could be in a higher gear.

As for tyre wear, again many variables, but I can imagine the slightly greater weight and more significantly, the higher consistent torque directed to the wheels (particularly on traffic light get-aways), the auto could wear tyres quicker.

However, with a different driver and driving style, both the above could be reversed.
