Doesnt sound good...Synchro gone?

I suugets you call a good independant service co, (e.g. Northway in Reading,01189 714333) , describe the problem see what they say.

Sounds like your 3rd gear synco has gone.

It could be a worn clutch, the clutch operating mechanism or just the oil needing changing. An idependant will soon diagnose which. The cheapest fix, the gearbox oil change, is certainly worth a try prior to forking out for a gearbox rebuild.

could be the differential chewing itself up....

you need to check the gearbox oil for any metal fragments.. but be ready for bad news (?)

but you could trying to give the gear levers (accessed from inside, remove all the gaiters, etc ) a good WD40 costing ... might work... if not hope the gearbox oil is clean...
