I've got a low speed squeal from my front brakes so I've decided to replace the anti-vibration shims.

There seem to be 3 sizes for my 1996 C2 Coupe: 36mm, 40mm and 44mm

Does anyone know why there is this choice and which ones I should choose?

Also, should these front shims be stuck onto the back of the pads? I wonder how the pads will slide into the caliper with shims stuck to the back??

Thanks

They will not slide in with them on

So you have 2 choices ,put the shims in to the pistons first then slide the pads in or take the calipers off and then you can put pad and shim in together

Dont know the answer to the size one :?:

But my advice before doing either is go find a quite straight road and perform some real heavy braking for 10m ins or so to clear the winters crap off your pads

When I do pad change I use a wallpaper scraper to slide between the pads and shims this frees shims away from the pads first then slide them out and remove the shims as opposed to taking the calipers off

I would put the shims into the pistons first, then slide in the pads - no glue required. That's what I did, many miles ago, and tested on the back straight at Goodwood.

There are two different sized shim per caliper.... but I don't know why there are THREE sizes listed, unless one is for the turbo caliper?

Can't you just order a set from someone?

HOWEVER - have you inspected your current shims? What makes you think they are the problem?

What pads have you got in there?

For the front you need 4 44mm plates and 4 36mm plates. Not sure where 40mm plates are used - not on a 993 me thinks.

They are OEM pads.

I have tried chamfering the leading edges of the pads and I have also used coppergrease on the backs of the pads without success. So I am now changing the anti-squeal shims to see if that helps.

I will be having a go at the brakes this weekend, and I will report back once I have seen the state of the pads.

The shims don't wear out per se - replacing them is not likely to make much, if any difference.

Find a quiet road and do a few panic stops from 70-80 down to 10 in rapid succession. More and/or from a higher speed is better. That should clear the glaze from the pad surfaces.
