993 Exhaust Assistance/Suggestions for a c2 cab

so after a huge array of tinkering and upgrades i am thinking of swapping the stock exhaust for something a bit throatier but it seems to be a minefield - i am errrring towards an RSR set of back boxes as these are reported to not be droney which i certainly dont want, i am after something quiet when cruising and snarly when pushed on.

Would a replacement back box help the car breath and rev a little free-er or is this a job to reduce cat cells? Or wont anything help?

I have seen the fabspeed that is offered by @Donx22 and that looks amazing but a little out of budget and not really sure if they would just be a shiny waste of money or would they aid performance? Maybe the MAXFLO would be a cheaper option but is that going to be too loud?

any help would be greatly appreciated

i got a replacement exhaust for my 420SL previously and made the mistake of not researching first so had to go back and buy another back box to reduce droning at speed so dont want to do the same! Buying twice hurts!

Carnewal are your best option IMHO, on an exchange basis or you can search doing the Hollomby bypass ....

Nb the biggest improvement in exhaust not is removing/bypassing the built in mufflers as above BUT then getting it remapped by Wayne schofield (chipwizard) as that removes the infamous 993 flat spot and really adds the exhaust gurgle the air cooled are famous for ,-)

would the RSR boxes help engine rev freely though - they sound about perfect to me, not too loud at low revs and then a bit snarly when put under load

option from TopGear https://www.topgear.co.uk/aftermarket-exhausts?mfp=4-make[Porsche],5-model[911 (993)],stock_status[0]

no as it's made for sound, those boxes just use a stubby pipe inside the box for more noise
but you do loose a bit of the free flowing ability of the exhaust

the original 993 RSR exhaust was developed by Robin Sun, who no longer sells them, which Gert Carnewal copied

i've got a picture of the insides somewhere

this is OEM

hmmmmmmmmm thanks - maybe the 200 cell cat will be what I am after then - am I right thinking that will help engine breath and rev a little more freely?

the conversion

just add a pipe

simple and effective

i'm about as useful at these sorts of jobs as a nun would be - I arent really after loud, the increase in breathing to stop the engine feeling restricted would be more like the reason to do any change - never really done an exhaust swap not even in my youth!!!

I have the Carnewall RSR boxes and they are superb. No booming with a lovely sound, more audible inside than out. Note that Carnewall no longer offer an exchange service, you buy their new Porsche Factory back boxes suitably modified. I had to replace my stock boxes as one rusted through at the outlet pipe.

i heard the RSR are a lovely unit - but wonder if the 200 cell cats would serve more purpose in trying to let the engine rev a little easier.

My experience is the RSR and schofield remap made my car sound / perform perfectly.

Honestly THE 993 guru to speak to and answer your personal requirement is Wayne Schofield, he has tuned more of these cars than anyone else period. The hard bit is getting hold of him as he supports so many indys and race teams. If your local to Rochdale it's worth a trip over just yo talk to him.

HI Jonttt - ive already been on that journey to see Wayne - eeked it up to 299bhp ;)

He was brill and has made a significant difference - i am just thinking the next step is perhaps a fabspeed x-over 200 cell upgrade

Great but I'd still seek his advice as he would have mapped many a car with the configuration

good point - cheers
