Out driving the 2S yesterday - the clutch bitting point seems quite high up on the travel. In fact I can change gear by pressing the clutch pedal down only about 1 inch! Doesn't feel right?

If I depress the clutch while the car is doing a steady speed and then gradually release it again, the drive engages approx. half way to a third from the resting position of the clutch pedal.

Does this sound right?

Yep, TT and C4S hydraulic (maybe C4 too?)

C2 old and simple

C4 doesn't have hydraulic clutch as I had a similar problem in mine. The clutch would bite right at the end of travel, made roundabouts etc. interesting. Simple fix though....new clutch! :(
