993 aircon

Ok, I'll own up to making a mistake. Having found my 993 in the latter stages of winter, and being too excited at the time over the condition/price interface, I made a boo boo by buying a car without aircon. Not a problem for 95% of the year in this country I know, but on the other 5%, it's pretty desperate without it.

So, if I could find another car in as good a condition as mine but with aircon, I'm thinking perhaps I should go for a trade in. However, from what I read on this and other forums, 993 aircon doesn't sound all that great.

Anyone got any advice?

Ps Paragon track day place still available for next Monday at Castle Combe. Why no takers?

993 aircon is not that great. It's better than nothing but when the weather is really hot outside, it just about manages to make it bearable inside. Put it this way, my little Smart car has better air con than my 993 (yes, that's after checking for leaks etc and recharged coolant). It's certainly nice to have but not sure if it's worth changing the car for it. Any thought about aftermarket air con?

Thanks Mick. I have wondered about an after market installation as an alternative, but not yet investigated cost, effectiveness or suppliers. Any recommendations?

The only other alternative seems to be opening the sun roof and windows and slowing down to reduce the noise and turbulence but that seems like heresy!

Butzi's right, 993 aircon is pretty much ineffective. I find that the vent position in the centre favours the passenger rather than the driver resulting in passenger side being blasted with cool (ish) air and me roasting.

Can't imagine an aftermarket kit and if such a thing exists you'd want new vent positions to optimise flow to the driver.

Windows down, sunroof open, drive faster for cooler air ingress?

I am amazed that there are those problems with the 993 aircon. I have a targa glass roof version (so heat gain is high through the roof) and last summer did 4000 miles in France and Italy in the hottest summer temperatures for years (95 plus every day) with out any problems!

The manual says use the ac at least once a month on maximum to keep seals and bearings in good condition.

Also the re is a "max ac" button for clearing high temperatures when you first get into the car.

There y'go - I should have read the manual, I've been avoiding using the aircon 'cos I wanted to delay recharging etc for as long as poss

I agree with Stevo. My aircon is pretty damn good - I always use the second fan setting and the lower aircon button on the left of the controls - seriously good enough to give you a headache if you run it for more than 10 minutes.....

Reading Stevo's mail above, I guess the 'Max AC' is the top one on the LHS - I feel that it makes the fan blow too hard and I don't think the air cools down enough on its way through - try it on the lower setting?

Slightly off-topic, my 993's aircon is out of action but Parr (in Godstone) reckoned they needed £1300 to fix it -- the evaporator unit has corroded and the petrol tank needs to come out in order to get at it.

However, a Rennlister sent me the details of an aircon specialist he'd used, who when I called him said he could do it for just under half that. So far the omens are good -- he's very flexible, will even travel to pick up the car.

I'll report back...

So, confusion reigns! Some of you are saying 993 aircon is crap, whilst others are saying it's effective enough to download the balls off a brass monkey. Is the explanation that the aircon specs differ between the Targas or S models and the standard Carreras?

I think they're all pretty much the same. And when mine was working, it did kick out plenty of cold air...

From what I have heard, it's pot luck in most cases. My Targa happens to be working fine - it;s certainly not the greatest and 'modern' cars whip it in terms of the temp, but my previous C4 in Australia was regassed and they did some minor modification which was to move one of the sensors to somewhere else which imporved the performance of the a/c a fair bit. Having said that, I have no idea what they moved orwhere, so bit bloody useless really.

Aircon works. But there are plenty that have gone pear-shaped...

Mine works pretty well on fan setting 2 or 3, enough to keep the temp comfortable. The 'max' setting also acts as a fast demister in winter. Aircon does tend to dry the air out as well which makes things more bearable, as when it is hot in this country it is usually also very humid. I had mine regassed during the winter at a cost of £60 by a guy who came to the house with all the gear.

My aircon is always really good, even in last summers 90+. Using it regularly keeps it in good shape. I wonder whether mine might have had a sensor mod a la Mr Philpott as its way better than any others I've been in. My previous 964 was totally crap even after regassing.

As far as differences between cars is concerned - mine has a climate control temperature setting knob on the left of the panel and a fan speed knob on the right - seems like some cars have a different set up
