993 - A car for everyday use?

Looking for some advice, I'm considering purchasing a 911 as a second car for our family which will be my car that I will run every day for about 5-10 miles a day and for fun at weekends. I've discounted the 996 due to problems on all but Turbos and have driven a 997 carrera 4s but am hankering after a 993 as it might hold its value rather than depreciate further.

Are these cars ok for everyday use? They also seem to be in short supply and prices quite step.

Welcome :thumb: This question was recently asked and you should find it in the 993 section.

Mixed view but the consensus is using the 993 is not an 'ideal' everyday car given the lack of featues that more modern motoring brings. But with your daily travel there may be minimal impact.

Great cars for weekend, special trips for that 'back to basic' driving in a car that is total quality in terms of build and function.

Buy on condition as the spread can be anywhere from £18k - £30k for a C2/4. Be prepared to spend money for upkeep but you shouldn't lose your shirt if you buy wisely. Dont necessarily be put off by higher mileage - these cars can handle it without issue.

Best of luck

Daren,

I have a 993 C4 which I use 3-4 times a week on my short work commute (about 3 miles in London) and on sunny weekends and found it to be absolutely fine. It replaced a 997C2S Tip, which was a lot easier in traffic but much more boring on fun trips.

I think it works out just fine provided you have the use of a second car for longer, non-fun journeys!

Agree on mileage. I bought mine at nearly 180k (it has now done nearly 182k in the 4 months of my ownership) and I've had no unexpected issues. Buy on condition!!

Cheers and good luck in finding the right car!

I think you can run a car every day with provisos of:

Putting miles on it. IF THAT MATTERS.
Hefty clutch
Needing A/C, and heater working properly
Worries about parking in car parks

It has excellent visibility, easy to park, not 'in your face' and economical (25mpg??)

Best thing is to lurk on this (excellent) forum to find out what's hot and what's not. (Back to heater issues again...)

Many threads on what to look for and common issues and likely annual maintenance bill.

Hi,

Used mine as a daily drive for almost 2 years when I first moved to Spain at the end of 2010, ran like a dream and never let me down.... well once the battery packed up :x Car was low Kms when I brought it here, only 74K Kms and only has 93K Kms on it now. I now use it for weekend outings, sunny days, of which there are a plenty :D and posh do's 8) they are great cars, you won't be disappointed.

Good luck

ATB :)

Prices quite steep compared to what?

As mentioned there are posts covering this topic and from memory the responses were balanced with reasonable points for either way. There are some 993 owners who drive less than 1k miles per annum on specific dry days with certain temperatures etc and others who drive it daily and have over 200k on the clock (of which 150k was done by the present owner)

Pretty sure there's a chap on here with 250k+ (maybe 300k+) on the clock without a rebuild.

I do about 60% in the 993 and 40% in the Golf.
When I'm in the Golf, I miss the 993.
Whenever I'm in the 993, I absolutely love it.

Yes, you can drive them every day, but I don't think you should - just so they can be something to look forward to and feel more special occasionally :thumb:

Reading between the lines, go for a 996 or 997. Much better value.

A credit to Porsche engineering!
