This is my first post so hello to everybody. I am currently trying to sell my Elise 111R which should fetch £24k. The idea is to then spend £15-£18K of this on a Porsche and the rest on an extension. The question is what should i buy, i like the look of the classic 3.2 carrera (G50) and this i believe will make the best financial sense however i do intend to use the car on track a lot, with this in mind do i buy 964 C2 or just forget the extension and buy a 993 C2. I cant make my mind up. Also can you fit a childs seat in the back of all the above (no kids yet but the missus is making noises about starting a family so don't want a car that i would have to sell if she got pregnant)

You can buy child seats for Porsches but check they fit the jump-seat as none of ours fit in my Toy. Also check that there is a three-point belt in the jump-seats as I don't think this was an option on Cabs until the 993. No problem on recent 964 / 993 coupes and targas, provided they are Porsche specific.

However, I'd talk to someone with kids if you think carrying younger children in carriers and car seats is easy in any coupe! You've got a year of Porsche driving before you have to worry anyway.

The 3.2, 964 and 993 are, as you'd expect very different cars. For instance, no ABS or power steering on the 3.2. Can't comment on what is more interesting on a track as I haven't driven that many but I'm surprised you don't touch on the option of a C4.

Budget and condition will drive your choice but for every day, unless your very hardy, I'd look at the 964 and 993.

I would consider a C4, just never been a lover of 4wd (4wd seem to understeer, although i have never driven a 911) Would a C4 be as much fun as a C2 on track?

Other's are better placed to comment than me and you may be a bit of a hero on the track, but my experience is that when they go, they go big time, but then a Porsche sticks better than most.

A Carerra will probably be cheaper to run than a C4 and marginally quicker in the dry because of the weight saving but 4wd must be better when the road surface starts to deteriate.

It will be interesting to see what those that have owned several variants have to say. I'd still go for the best condition and value for money as this is what any subsequent buyer will focus on.

For the enthusiasts on this forum, it seems the ownership experience is as important as anything else.

BTW Anthony is the track day turbo master !

911 is like glue IN THE DRY ! in the wet (I haven't figured that part out yet!) a C4 is about right....

on track, the 4wd will have a bit more understeer but the car is still more rear biased.. so not like understeer in say a 4wd Audi.......so there is nothing to loose out on the track day experience..

Have had a C2 and now have a C4. Majority of time the power goes through the rear and only starts to go the the front when you start to lose traction. If you look at my rears compared to the fronts you will know that power goes through the rear:)

When pushed there is slightly more u/steer compared to the C2. One thing to note is that the C4 is quicker to 60 than the C2 as there is less wheel spin.

I had a dedicated track toy beforehand... then my little one came along. I thought long and hard about what car to get as the "family car"... I'm now the proud owner of a 993 C4. The little one (he's now going on 4 years old) calls it "Pappy's Porsche". :) He fits in fine in the back, and I reckon a larger car may not be necessary for at least another 3 years or so... Life's too short to be driving around in boring diesel MPVs. Enjoy your next 6-7 in the car you want to drive now. Oh, and because it's the family car, it had to be the C4 as the sensible and safer option ;-)
