Stephen

I suggest you re-post in 'Porsche cars wanted' on this forum, Owners Cars is for pictures of cars owned by forum members.

I'll keep an eye out- the right car will appear in the end!

Are you looking for a tip or manual?

Robert.

As it's Friday and I'm getting bored waiting for the witching hour when I can burger off to Poole, I'm going to hijack this thread to be contentious.

I have to say that I don't get the S cars.

I sort of get them in terms of aesthetics, because they look good, but otherwise you are buying a more expensive, heavier and hence slower car than the equivalent coupe. From what I have seen, the new 997S is even more J Lo than, well, J Lo

Are they a triumph of form over function? Do they say "look at me, my car looks like a turbo even though I can't afford a turbo"?

As the school essay instructions used to say: "discuss"

I shall now mostly be running for cover!

Richard Very interesting point. Ive always thought its down to aesthetics with the S looking more attractive more purposeful, and I do like those red Brakes.

However interestingly to the non-911 Freaks (to coin a phrase) maybe its not true. I park my car in the car park at work and normally next to my colleagues 993 4 S (mutual respect of paintwork etc), the other day a few of us were leaving the building a discussion initiated not by me was had on which looked better. Outcome? majority said the non S car, reasons being 'it looks sleaker' 'The S looks rear heavy' 'S looks like a cruiser whilst the normal one looks like a racer'.

A very non-scientific study I know. Now where do I get some nice Red Calipers??

And so you should. You sound just like bl**dy Clarkson

I think he compared the 4S to a model with silicone implants compared to the turbo being the model with the natural double F's. The S is a natural follow on to the SE/SSE I guess where the wider body turbo shell is seen by some as more curvacious than the stock carrera. The 4S in both 993 and 996 has all the turbo running gear too but without the blower. So lowered / uprated suspension, up-graded brakes etc etc. Up-grades by the way, that Carrera owners spend a ruddy fortune on?? In comparison to regular 2 and 4, it was also produced in far fewer numbers therefore residuals are much stronger.

ps - Looking forward to grabbin a swift half with you later :D

I'm with Hendo -

When you say 'slower' - 0-60 time may be slower, and maybe 1MPH off the top end.

But - take a C4, add bigger brakes, sports suspension, bigger wheels and see what it costs you - (all normal track day mods) - for a cost of much more than the price difference between the two IMHO.

In addition I personally think the big hips look awesome!

It comes down to colour as well, the lighter ones do not stand out well.

I was parked between two S's and the silver one looked the same width as mine. You really had to look closely to see the difference. Personally not a fan of them, but each to there own.

Comment about brakes and suspension. Chances are that the standard brakes will be good enough for the majority of owners and the suspension upgrade would cost about £1500 - 2000 fitted for a non adjustable eg Bilstein HD system, again the majority of owners would not benefit from adjustable suspension.

If you are quick there is a 993 C4S in blue with grey interior on Ebay for not a bad price right now but the auction ends very soon like today.

Dont be fooled by what people say. S cars do look great and if you really think you notice any difference in acceleration to a standard 993 then you must be as fussy as an F1 driver. Ive have tried both and there is no notable difference that you pin point especially on UK roads. Both cars are beautiful but for me the S just has that little bit extra it is just down to personal impressions. Just dont get a pink one!!!!

extra weight and drag of fatter wheels / arches would be minimal. I would be more worried about transmission loss due to 4WD resulting in much less power at wheels

that said the 993 and 996 4S look so much nicer the std cars which to me look boring by comparison

I shall be hiding under the cover with Richard
