So a nose first dive into Porsche self maintenance (mainly with help from the old man - thanks @Alex)... the first fix on the agenda was to tackle the dicky reverse lamps. A first glance diagnosis spotted both lamps out, which sit on a fuse with the mirror adjusters. Working mirrors, and the chances of two bulbs having burst are slim, so it was looking like it would be the reverse light switch.
This seem a fairly common problem on the 996/997 but I was hard pressed to find much info online specific to the Boxster (in my case a 2004 Boxster S). The first point of interest is that, on the 3.2 Boxster S, it's a totally different switch to that found on a 966/997, so be advised to get the right part number!
We backed the car up onto some axel stands and out comes the 19mm spanner. A few burns later (the works best done on a cold car as the sensor sits just in front of the back boxes) the father had the old switch out and on the work bench. It was completely toast, no amount of pulling, pushing, probing or isopropyl could get a solid circuit on our multimeter, so it was on t' t'web to Design911 to order the replacement (https://www.design911.co.uk/p/reverse-light-switch-porsche-996-carrera-99660613300/ for reference).
A sticky plot twist, despite still showing as "In Stock" on the website I've received a confirmation email from Design911 that I could expect delivery on 31st May 2024. A tad inconvenient, as I'd rather not fancy my chances reversing without lights for the better part of 15 weeks.
So off to OPC Stockport it is! The helpful parts team have one on order which will arrive on Wednesday at a total price of £50 inc VAT. I'll post a follow up with some piccies of the switch location and access, and hopefully confirmation the job has been completed successfully!
