928 GTS project

I've sprayed the exhaust bolts with penetrating oil, going to undo the two front exhaust flanges and SAI pipe, drop the exhaust a little at the front so I can get the inspection cover off to view the flex plate.

Hope it goes well :thumb:

It took all of about 10 minutes to get the exhaust off :) Just cracked the nuts with a single hex socket and then they were finger tight.

Exhaust out of the way I can see the offending bolts.

With the cover off I can see the flex plate.

The problem is that the propshaft moves within the joint and puts pressure on the flex plate, here you can see the measurements before and after loosening the bolt.

It had moved about 4mm......
Next to check the end float. Dial gauge set up to measure it, I redid this with it mounted on the lift, tough to find any decent bits of flat steel underneath the car.

From measurements in two places underneath, and with digital calipers I believe it to be about 8-10 thou, spec is a maximum of 16, so happy days. Just to be sure I am going to bring in a digital depth mic and check with that as well.

Happy days indeed. Aged bolts that undo easily on a Porsche, must be an old one

This heatshield needs to come off to get to the rear pinchbolt.

Cover removed, I would change this bolt but only 1 available from Porsche, this one is easiee to get at so just checking torque for now. The spec for torque was revised and these can loosen. It was tight to the old spec, so nippped up to the new spec.

Cover for the flex plate given a quick clean.

This is the kind of thing that gives me a warm feeling when I buy a car. A full set of matching Michelin N3 tyres from 2017/18 with no wear on them. The previous owner cared.

MC

If I've ever looked at a car for sale and seen different tyre brands or tread patterns, I just walk away.

Like curbed alloys, it speaks volumes.

End float spec is 0.110 to 0.312mm I double checked with a digital gauge to make sure the needle wasn't going around more than once on my other one when it moved quickly.

New bolt fitted at the front. Penetrating loctite for the splines and medium strenth oil resistant for the bolt.

MC

New bolt fitted and torqued up, shaft marked with paint so I can easily see if it has moved.

Exhaust refitted, along with SAI pipe, a pair of new gaskets required.

I fitted the cover last so that I can make sure it can be removed with the exhaust in place. The rear two bolts are left out for now, but I might fit shorter ones. just to fill the holes.

MC

Before I put the new underbody covers on I'm going to give the underside a quick clean with some gunk and water, this is what it looks like beforehand.

The underbody covers have vents in them to get air to important parts. This is the only car I have seen which has an air cooled alternator and vents to keep the engine mounts cool!

I'll be getting some new intake hoses. Apparently underbonnet temperatures get very high, so important that these are in good shape.

Air filter was incorrectly fitted in the housing, so removed that, checked it, and refitted. Two clips are not fitted correctly in this photo. Just spotted that :)

Fitted a quick connector for a CTEK to the power post under the bonnet, so I can charge from the front of the car.

I'll be fitting one in the back as well. The battery is mounted impressively low down in the rear. Under the spare wheel!

MC

Some of the underside after a quick clean. I just wanted to get the worst off, I wasn't going for a full detail on it.

Time for an oil change. The oil in it has only done a few hundred miles, but is three years old. Going for Valvoline as apparently it has a high zinc content which these engines like. No crush washer supplied but I have a bunch of them anyway, so new one fitted.

Old filter before removal. A genuine Porsche one no less!!

New one in place and a bit of cleaning up around the area.

It does look like a very clean car for its age :thumb:

Your 928 looks to be a cracker.. The 928 is a real Porsche built to last with quality materials, thus no surprise that the exhaust came apart with little effort. I replaced front springs and one lower suspension arm on my pals 928, getting the adjustable collar off the shocker was a bit of an issue, as was removing the lower arm, for some reason that I can not remember I had to unbolt the engine mounting and jack the engine up on one side to get the arm off, I think the bolts that hold it pass all the way through the chassis leg... Yeah, it was a long time ago.

There were numerous electrical issues also though traced that to fuses not correctly in their holders causing intermittent issues... I do like 928`s, even though broken bolt heads on the water pump were a bit of an issue when trying to replace it, I would also be thinking of replacing the timing belt and idler roller...as a precaution. :?:

Timing belt, idler, and loads of other parts were done as part of £12.5k of work which was carried out by GT One Porsche specialists in 2018. Including both heads off and refurbed. It has only done a few hundred miles since.
I was going to do the ATF and diff oils but saw that they had been done. TBH they haven't left me a lot to play with other than a cracked front fog light and a few cosmetic bits. At least one of the screws in the fog light is rounded off so I have something to get stuck in to. I'm a little disappointed.

I've knocked up a video explaining what I have done above, and why it needs to be done.

MC

You need to do more of these vids, excellent stuff :thumb:
