915 vs G50. The differences

I came across this article and thought it was worth posting here gor future reference.

When I was buying my 930 and doing a bit of research I phoned a few places and asked for advice, specifically about the 915 vs the G50, because there was a lovely 1986 930 for sale 15 miles from my house with the 915 box, it was in absolutely lovely condition, low miles and a reasonable price - but everyone I spoke to told me to avoid the 915 and go with the G50 in every case, so it had to be a 1989 car.

From memory I've only driven one car with a 915 and it wouldn't go in 1st when it was cold and it was notchy in 2nd as well until it warmed up, along with a grabby clutch. Although I've driven a 964 with a G50 box that was very similar, so perhaps it's more about badly set up gearboxes rather than the 915 being worse.

915 can be a lovely gearbox . Those who say don't choose one have obviously only experienced a poor one or are spouting what they've read. ... although in the case of your turbo, the 89 car is always suggested as the preferred choice because it was a 5 speed rather than 4 .

I've driven my 5 speed 915 boxed '73 car for for 22 years now and never had any issues . I wont deny it's not a quick short shift like an mx5. Now the box in my 964 can be a notchy thing when cold !

I'm sure it's like the Tiptronic, hated by all those people who have never had one, but loved by those of us that have.
People tend to grow to love what they've invested in, the 911 is a perfect example, engine hanging out over the back, strange quirks, but we all love them.

I read an article a bit like the one posted, which said the 915 was a great box and in some ways better (or liked more) than the G50, so before I went to talk about a deal on the 1986 930 I phoned around a few Indys and got advice, but it was all the opposite and a general dislike of the 915, so I'm still none the wiser.

I'd like to try one back to back, just to see.

The thing that surprises me is that everything I've read says the clutch on the G50 is lighter. Couldn't be more opposite from my experience on the weekend.

All things being equal it should be as it's hydraulic, but if either one has been played about with, then who knows.
I've come across well set up cable actuated clutches that felt better than a nasty hydraulic one.

I don't recall my 930 clutch being any different than any other manual car I've driven, the gear change wasn't something I remember.
I think it's lighter than my clutch in my Defender but I don't know if that means anything either.
