3 weeks in to 997.2 Turbo ownership - a few noddy questions

Hi,

I recently moved from a 2007 997.1 C2S to a 2010 997.2 Turbo. Love the new car but also loved the old one too... The turbo is a completely different car to my old one, looks very similar but genuinely wasn't expecting it to be quite so different... I have a few questions iv struggled to work out:

1. How do i get the oil measurement on start up back? Really appreciated doing an oil level check before using the car... the turbo doesnt seem to do it, is that something i have to switch on? I can measure myself but would prefer to do it every time i drive

2. What is the correct oil pressure i should be seeing on the gauge? On the C2S it would be above 3 most of the time and usually around 4 or 5 if accelerating. In the turbo it seems to hover around 2, then increase to 3 when accelerating and only really gets to 5 when at near full throttle or on start up?

3. I get a white puff of smoke from the exhaust lasts about 20 seconds on start up, a quick search suggests that's normal and then some other threads suggests it could be a turbo on its way out... which is it?

4. I also have moisture on the tail pipes, when i touch the tailpipe the moisture doesn't seem to be oil (i dont think) it has a water consistency but its a dark colour is that just condensation mixed with soot from the tailpipes?

5. what does mechanical sympathy look like on these cars? On the C2S the advice was get in and drive straight away as idling from start washes off the lubricant on the cyclinders (i think i read that somewhere) is that the same procedure on the Turbo or should i be letting it idle until revs drop etc? I follow usual approach of letting it fully warm before any hard throttle etc

6. I have some wheel spacers from my C2S that i took off, will these work on the Turbo? they are 15mm rear and 7mm front, do people put them on Turbos? I feel like the rear could come out a bit but equally dont want to ruin the handling etc

Thats all for now, really enjoying the amount of power on tap, it really is rapid... The other surprising bits is just how much tighter the car feels than the C2S much smoother to drive, suspension is really tight and supple and no creaks etc in the car... all in all very happy so far (barring an issue with the spoiler mechanism i had which seems to have fixed it self)

Re Q1. oil measurement is different between generations, gen 1 and gen 2. My gen 2 non turbo car is the same as your gen 2 turbo i.e. no measurement on startup. I guess it's related to the gen 2s having 9A1 engines. On the gen 2 non turbo cars the oil has to be up to temp to be measured so on startup wouldn't be accurate.

Oil should be measured when the engine is hot, then as long as no leaks should be checked occasionally. Never had to top up between services on 991.1 and 991.2 Turbos and also my 992

Your Oil pressure readings seem normal

Smoke on start up is probably moisture and it should clear up. If you are worried then have someone follow you and check for blue smoke under had acceleration and also during coast-down

Mechanical sympathy is to drive carefully until oil is up to 80C (avoid boost if at all possible)

Also after high speed driving, let the car idle for a few minutes to let the turbos cool before switching off (even though the fan runs on its still good to get the heat out of the engine)

Enjoy the car, the Turbo is a weapon and needs lots of self restraint :)

thanks for the responses

Shame about the oil measurement - thought that was a quite a nifty feature and reminds you the importance of keeping the oil topped up

The car really is a total weapon, just absurdly fast... I have tried to get off the line quickly a couple of times now, dont have chrono in the car so no launch control so when trying to go off the line you do notice a bit of turbo lag before it starts to fly but when on the move its insane
