Which is the best 911 RS?

Thanks for taking the time to reply folks....
Railway company 🤷‍♂️

Make a killing and sell your brothers franchise to operate on your track. He got the best deal. Could of bought his own boat out right :p

I suspect my uncle had few if any entrepreneurial skills as a kid, but as an adult bought a rather nice moody 30 and sailed it for a few decades... (y)

I sold my Oyster last year (cried a bit too) and I’d love an old Moody with the centre cockpit and rear master cabin, but I’ll be relocating to the UK and I’m a fair weather sailor, watching my friends get all done up in seven layers of Musto and heading out into the North Sea does nothing for me.

And boats are literally a full time hobby, they leave you no time for anything else. With cars you can put them on a charger and leave them for months at a time, but do that with a boat and it’ll be green or sunk when you come back.

My choice would be 964RS or 993RS to drive in UK, I have driven 996 GT3 RS, MkII 996 GT3 and 997 GT3 RS Mk1 / 2 (not 4.0) these would seem more enjoyable on a bigger track, Spa, Ring Silverstone. Just one car I would go for 964 RS.

I think I’ve posted about this, but I tested a 964 RS earlier in the year. It wasn’t an original one, it was a C2 that had been completely rebuilt as a modern version of an RS with 3.8L engine, full EFI, Ohlins all round, no expense spared, etc.

It was incredible, up there with the best cars I’ve ever driven, it was so well balanced and set up that I could slide the back on a roundabout with such predictability that it was rude not to - and I’m not a great driver, it was just that easy.

But it’s still an old car with all the old car quirks and I wanted something I could use regularly, even daily, and it would have been really hard to live with on a daily basis.

As a Sunday morning car it would have been a dream, but it would have needed more regular maintenance and on the days when you don’t want to have to concentrate and just drive to work it would have been too much.

As a younger man I’d have bought it anyway and put up with it, but being older and wiser I bought a bog standard 997 C2S instead and even though I kind of regret not buying the RS I did make the right decision.

But is that not the point of an RS ie it should not make a “nice” daily…..to me RS is a track car that can be driven on the road. To equate this to modern cars a 992 GTS is a much better car than a 992 GT3 RS unless you are buying it to track………that principle applied to all generations. Comparing any RS car to a none RS car is pointless IMHO.

I suppose you're not wrong but it's like a Range Rover, it's an off-road expedition vehicle, but I bet 99.9% of them never go anywhere near an expedition, but they still make brilliant road cars.

A Porsche RS used to be a decent road car and it still could be, I bet most do more road miles than track miles and they definitely look better than a GTS, but sadly they're too focussed to enjoy properly on the roads.

But the Range Rover is both a great off roader AND road car, in fact IMHO it is the best all round car you can buy. The only thing against them is their size. Currently I’m likely to go back to one after the Taycan.

The GT3RS is a great track car but not a good road car so not a comparable ie it is not great as a dual purpose car unlike a Range Rover. There are signs Porsche is trying to address that ;-)

Ps I’ve ploughed through more fields in a Range Rover than I have tracked a GT3RS lol

Agreed most GT3RS see little miles and many never see a track. They are in my view the ultimate poser / tick box car in that respect….all about willy waving in its purest form. If I tracked I would have one in a heartbeat but I don’t and I just quietly smile when I see one on road.

I think I love you :)
On another forum I got shredded for saying that the L322 Range Rover (but really any RR) was the best car on the planet.

But when considering what is "better" it's hard to actually measure something like you like.
Consider my Puma Defender, I had a conversation that went like...

Him - Ooh that's nice, is it nice to drive?
Me - It's ok, not great to be honest, it's basically a Transit van
Him - But is it good off road?
Me - Genuinely awful, my Nissan 4x4 is astoundingly better
Him - So what is it good at?
Me - Erm...looking like a Defender
Him - Would you sell it?
Me - Not for a golden pig...

In any measurable way it's got to be one of the most awful vehicles on the planet, but I love it so much that I'd honestly lie awake at night if I sold it.

Most people I know who can literally drive any car they wish and have the luxury of extensive cars at their disposal have varied preferences in what they have in their garage, the one thing they have in common almost without exception is they have a Range Rover on the drive (just like your Clarsons and Metcalfs of this world)……they are in my mind the best all round car in the world …….they are crap on track though ………although I have raced them on an equestrian paddock track for giggles

Ps I still think the same after I had one which needed a new engine and turbos 2 weeks after its first service at c15k miles lol

We have an old slugger L405 SV supercharged limo at work, I did a factory pick up on it when new, we sold it once and bought it back as a staff taxi ……..that’s ploughed through some fields in its time ;-)

We’ve had various RRs but the constant (like Clarkson) is our L322. It’s the petrol 4.4L version and it’s 20yrs old but it’s one of the family and we all love it.

We can go to the South of France in it or to the shops, it’s brilliant, almost worthless and priceless at the same time.

I don’t know where I’d draw the line on keeping it going but we’re fully prepared to throw serious money at it to keep it serviceable. It’s been a genuinely wonderful vehicle for us.

964 RS could be a decent contender, but they look so dinky and fragile to me, I doubt I’d get on with one of those. Plus, I’ve test driven a couple of 964s over the years and found it irritating that there was nowhere to rest my left foot, so was constantly hovering over the clutch instead of beside it. Both were standard C2’s from memory. Very pretty though, but a firm “non” from me 😂

I'm bored of the RS discussion. Let's talk about Range Rovers instead!

The first gen five door is the first, but not the only car, I broke by snapping the rear axle; my Dad was not pleased, I was secretly pleased. Although, I'd have to check dates, as the first might have been my Aunts Talbot where the piston came through the block. The Clio was much later.

I'm not mechanically sympathetic. These 997 cars are really reliable. I wonder if a 997 GT3 RS is reliable 🤔

At least once a day I look at the orange 997 GT3RS at JZM and wonder whether to just give in and buy it. If I hadn’t commissioned my 996 build I already would have.

But I’d have to sell my Defender to make room in the garage and even my man maths is struggling to justify owning four 911s.

The L322 is never for sale, the only way it’s leaving is to the scrap yard or (god forbid) it gets pinched. I defy anyone to own one and not think it’s the most amazing family car ever produced. I’d actually sell a Porsche to finance a rebuild on the RR if I had to.

964RS are great cars, but in standard spec are not really suited to UK B roads, at speed it's hard to keep them on the same side of the road!

n a recent podcast, Richard Tuthill, who seems to have a reasonable idea and some experience with Porsches? :)
Stated; " I think the 993 RS is potentially the greatest car Porsche ever built!"

Great car the 993 RS, Richard is also remaking and marketing a modern take on this model -
Definitely not as edgy and more forgiving than prior RS models and a huge step forward from the 964 RS in my view.
