What is my car??

The log book says Carrera 2 and I know its a 3.4 but have read that these engines were produced with two outputs - 300bhp & 320bhp. My car was registered July 2001. Is there anyway to find out what's under the hood??

A 3.4 has 300bhp, the 3.6 has 320bhp (345bhp with X51 powerkit).

2001 is a 3.4 the 300bhp the 3.6 320bhp was the gen 2 in 2002

I am thinking of having the car re-mapped (my last few cars have been so a bit of a tradition really. I know the gains aren't that impressive). The web sites I have looked at offering generic maps ie Superchips / Black code have two 3.4 engine variants on the drop down menu but I suspected it was wrong!

I think that raises the question, "do I want people who don't even know the existing output to mess around with the ECU?"

Must clarify!!! I'm not intending to use superchips, I have a local performance car specialist who has remapped my previous cars and I was trying to find some generic facts and figures online. Fear not, I wouldn't treat my pride and joy to anything so awful :lol:

Good luck with your research. I must admit the only people I'd be tempted to use for a remap are DMS, but given the known issues already with this engine I'm not sure it's worth any more risk.
(And mine has already been rebuilt by Hartech...)

Correct.

3.4 is both 300 and 320 BHP.

The latter with X51 PowerKit.

This was a £8,725 option from the factory (or about £14k as a dealer upgrade)

The giveaways will be the "X51" Exclusive option code on you bonnet VIL or service book VIL, and if not Tip (and not mod'd), the centre radiator and definitively, the alloy (rather than plastic) intake manifold.

It amazes me how many people on all forums and in person at our shop think that mapping is a black art, I want my map changed because the one in the car is a generic one by (insert manufacturer) for every car!! So I went to say Black Code and they custom mapped it........................no they did not they put their generic map on it !!! Every car and driver and use combo throws up multiple diff map types. We have mapped 4000+ vehicles for 1 large company and have just started all their vehicles worldwide, just done 80 in Spain in 4 days and their lease company asked us to look at the map in a van (one of 400) mapped by another VERY well known remapping company (as they werent saving any diesel) it was laughable, they had just reduced all values by 25% !!!!They had also mapped a few others and the only way this particular vehicle can be done is what we call Transdata ie ECU out Eprom removed and programmed on the bench...............the ecu had never been apart, upshot is we now have their contract !!!

We also dont charge a premium for 'top end' cars our 996 turbo map is little more than any other car (depends how custom you want it) anyone paying £1K plus for a reflash is stark raving mad !!!! It doesnt even cost half that these days to get a standalone ecu custom mapped on a dyno (if it comes with pre installed base map) !!!!!
