Time for Some TLC - Upgrade Suggestions

Afternoon all,

My 993 C2 manual is going in to a well known and respected specialist for a refresh. Will be its 30th birthday soon, so a bit of TLC is in order.

Car has covered 50k miles and has a very dry engine, so hopefully no surprises await.

Definitely needs some gearbox work, as 2nd->3rd gives a slight kick and isn't as smooth as it could be. Guessing the syncro rings. Clutch is also a little heavy, so maybe that should be changed.

Anything else worth doing and/or upgrading, while the box is out? LWF maybe?

Suspension, I'm guessing bushes/shocks. What are opinions on components, Porsche OE, or aftermarket?

Engine has been a little fluffy at times, but maybe filters and a thorough service is all it needs.

Its a beautiful example, that I want to use more, so my thoughts are to catch all the sensible preventative items, plus replace old drivetrain components to help it drive like it did when new.

All suggestions welcome (y)

Quick snap of it while in transit.....

  • Porsche RS single mass flywheel or 9m mid-weight flywheel if seeking performance yet compliance
    • Both will liven things up; the former by a decent amount more
  • FDM Short Shift Kit with Golden rod

  • Bilstein PSS10 or KW v3 are very popular
    • Tractive Active or Ohlins more expensive/fancy options
  • Polybush the front end, CG seem to use SuperPro
  • Full geo/alignment, Centre Gravity are renown experts

  • 100 or 200 cell cats will liven the exhaust side of things up
  • Visit Wayne Schofield aka ChipWizards for a live remap

Let us know what you go for, and how it all goes... (y)

In addition to all the sound recommendations above, I always recommend to install 993 RS engine mounts, not expensive, easy to install and make a huge positive difference.

Available from : Type911

Thanks for the suggestions - I’ll take a look and start to compile a list.

The car is totally original, something I feel is important to retain, however the flip side is that better performing parts can probably be had for less money, so some decisions to be made.

keep the suspension simple and comfortabl;e

replace the engine mounts with the same Carrera spec units, softer as some find RS too harsh and not sure if those Type911 are genuine or aftermarket items

suspension, keep it like for like, the bets ride and comfort

to improve the handling then only upgrade the anti roll bars, as you'll spend a bit in updating aged rubber suspension components

What about switching to 18” turbo twist alloys?

16" 17" and 18" are the options
your choice with any 993 carrera

depends on your direction with the car

btw, @xbox we need another thread on the rest of your car collection (y)

I reckon they could be aftermarket?

964 / 993 RS Engine Mount Set Aftermarket

I have them in my 993 and they transformed the feel for the better, the shifting also improved

I can't think of a single reason why that would be beneficial to the car's handling. They add weight compared to 16s and 17s, and it's the worst kind of weight - unsprung and rotational. If you like the look then fine, but they won't enhance the driving experience.

The increased width should give a more planted and settled ride, compared to the more floaty 17”s.

Wider contact patch and less sidewall to flex.

Post inspection report was good.

Externally the car is totally A1, paint, body, interior etc....

Mechanically, a few items to bring the car up to the same standard. The highlights include a new clutch/flywheel, replacing gaskets to chainbox/crankcase/rockers (engine only had some very minor areas of oil misting, but sensible to replace with engine out), refurb/paint/lacquer all calipers, replace all brake lines/flexis, new exhaust/boxes/tips, steam/ice clean underside, engine bay, fan, liners and suspension, rewax underside.

Cosmetically, new headlight lenses and the switch to 18's.

Pretty comprehensive and thorough, so looking forward to seeing the results :D
