I have a 1998 996 and I'm looking to upgrade the stereo from the factory fitted (basic) model I currently have. I would also like to get rid of the awful tape rack and put in a official Porsche sat nav system, rather than a portable one. Is this feasible?? Has anybody done it???

Hi Matt

1/ Take out a second mortgage

2/ Visit OPC and part with all of the above.

On a 98 996 you'd probably at best get PCM2 but the retro fit cost is horrendous. I was quoted £1k just for the telephone upgrade to the PCM2 I already have. I think most in your shoes would go for quality aftermarket product. There are a number of threads if you do a search relating to Becker et al.

aye as squire hendo says..

so if you have a single din radio.. am alternative is

fit a becker Traffic Pro High Speed series Sat Nav system that is incorporated in the radio unit.......... this is a quality aftermarket unit that is well proven and it has the porsche look as well...

Thanks for that I'll have a look,
But does anybody have any suggestions what to do with the tape rack space, they are so ugly. I want it taken out and the only thing I could think to fill the space was a Sat Nav screen, however OPC quoted me £3500 without the fitting!!!!

Could you replace it with a CD rack?

I thought about that, but havng a CD loader as opposed to a front loading there didn't seem much point and they are just a nasty and plastic. What I really need is for somebody to fit a dock for my iPod in there and then I can get the Sat Nav system suggested by Sundeep. (If me Wife let's me..)

In my '00 996 there are two bays under the standard CR-22. Both are simply "empty" bays, free to put any old junk in there. So either pull out your tape storage bay, and replace it with "empty" bays (not sure of part number) or get a garage to do it for you.

Ipod adapter:

But beware - it only works with newer version Beckers. If you want to keep the CR-22, then you need a Dension adapter, which isn't great, but does a job.
