Before you lot start, I'm not refering to skin tight swimming trunks - those of you who were at the curry night can imagine how awful I'd look in those :(

I was lucky enough to have the calibration of my speedo checked this afternoon and the result was that with mine reading 99 mph (aren't those digital apeedos good) the actual speed was 94.75 mph. Is this level of accuracy good, bad or indifferent?

BTW, the calibration was carried out by a silver Mitsubishi Evo VIII on the M23, so anyone travelling (or living) south of Gatwick, be warned.

. I only got back from holiday yesterday and was on my way to visit my sister in hospital. It's not a bloody police car, it's a boy racer's car but I was impressed by the sat nav console. He was able to check the car, my licence, whether I had Insurance and if I had a criminal record. He also had a lovely video of my spoiler retracting as I pulled onto the hard shoulder.

Rant over.

Mine is 5mph out at 70mph (ie it read 75 when I'm only doing 70). So it seems like the going rate!

This hase been true of my last few cars, they always overestimate the speed you are going.

mines bob on when put against the gps - unlike my audi a3 - 15% over! audi scam for servicing?

i've used a road angel with a gps speedo

all 996's appear to be about 4/ 7 mph out

i.e 70 mph indicated is about 66 on the road angel

90 mph is about 85

About the same as my 993 - approx 5% overread.

60 quid and three points, then? I suppose the Evo FQ (what does that stand for...?) is the ultimate rozzers' Q-car. Just makes boy-racers (not you Seagull!) want to take it on - with regrettable consequences.

Which is why I concentrate hard on sticking more or less to the speed limit on busy roads - you ever know who's watching you.

My BMW reads a consistent 3 mph over, at all speeds against the GPS system I have, don't know about the 993.

so seagull that EVO was a cop car?!?!?!?

I wonder if a police scanner would help. One that would pick up anything in say 50meters.

BTW that 94 would be the speed the cop’s car’s speed not yours. The way it works is they time you between 2 points over I think 200m. They must also keep the same distance from you at all times. Matching your speed to theres.

And if he was right up your ass. You might be able to say you felt in danger/threatened hence why you gave it some welly to get away (hey that work for some footballer)

I’d ask for the video so you can make sure that they checked your speed correctly

Some places magistrates give you a ban over 90 - worth checking this out. Turn up in a sober suite and have a solicitor plead for you.

bad luck there seagull..

well in Wiltshire the motorway cops drive around in the new Lexus GS300....

my speedo 7% over reads, digital speedo 4% over reads.. compared to the road angel....

Not wishing to get techy, but!!! would the speedo or digital speedo read different for 16 / 17 / 18 inch wheels?

I was potting along the other day, when a kind gentleman in a 'white van' flashed me. I duly did a quick check to confirm I was not kicking the arse out of it and saw 'Plod' over a km away sticking out like a pair of dog's conkers.

As I approached he stepped out and beckoned me to stop. I thought he was obviously bored and wanted to talk about the weather or something, but after confirming I knew the speed limit, he said: "I just had to stop you in a car like that - as you were only doing 23 mph........". We exchanged pleasantries and I went on my merry way.

Thought the speedo would be 10%+- out, but not that much.
Is this usual?

postamble();
Magistrates sentencing guidelines are to disqualify at 30mph OVER the posted speed limit UNLESS there are EXCEPTIONAL circumstances not to....

This is why you will hear about celebs being banned at over 100mph on the motorway...its not because 100 is a "magic" number - its because it's over 30mph over the national speed limit i.e. 70mph for motorway/dual-carriageways....

Therefore, normally speaking you wouldn't get a ban at 90mph unless you were on a single carriageway road (national speed limit=60mph)....

Of course there are exceptions to the rule...if there are circumstances that compound the offence i.e. speeding past school gates at 3pm on a school day could get you a ban even though you weren't 30mph over the 30mph limit for example.

Is this helpful to everyone?

Marc
