I've looked at various threads on the subject as I am trying to find a detector that can be mounted in the space below my CD holder on my 996 car rather than on the dash. Ideally I would like a GPS system. Is this possible to do and with which system ?

Comments and thoughts welcome

Simple answer - No!

A GPS system needs a clear view out of the car to get readings from satellites and therefore tucking it neatly away defeats this fundamental requirement. This is also the reason these systems don't work with heated screens found in Fords and the like.

If you're worried about wires and stuff, I see Black Spot have just launched a new model of the Road Angel which has a rechargable battery.

Do remember though to wipe the tell tale suction cup marks off the windscreen when you remove the device when you get out of the car - we don't want any more stories of scum breaking into motors

Simple answer = YES!

ORIGIN B2.

Just wired mine in today. I locate the actual device/cradle on the blank area just ahead of the gearshift. Takes about 15 minutes and is 100% reversable with no permanent damage. Includes both the laser detector and GPS unit - the GPS antenna sits next to the car alarm infrared at the bottom of the windscreen (wire is completely out of sight running along the base of the windscreen), and the laser detector is located right in front of the rearview mirror out of sight of the driver and passenger. Neat, discrete, and it does the job nicely.

I stand corrected - with an antenna fitted this obviously gets around the satellite issue - I'd be a bit worried about visibility for low life though?!

I have my Origin in exactly the same place on my GT3, great minds!

Just had RAC Trackstar plus fitted and they do a an option for £96 a year called safe speed which pinpoints fixed and variable safety cameras and `specs' multi camera detectors, not sure what they are can anyone explain.£96 looks a bit steep but cheaper than fines and losing your license, also i assume it could be updated to keep track with the latest technology via the GPS system, talking to someone the other day who sells these systems and they told me that a new speed trap system is to be introduced where the detectors are in the road kerb and in some counties they are already there but not active. Unfortunatly most of the camera detectors on the market ie road angel will not be able to detctect this type of camera.

How true the above new system is I don't know, anyone out there who does.

Oceancarrera/Poon

Sounded like good advice so I bought a brand new one on ebay tonight for £180 - sounded like a bargain to me until I remembered Poon's recent post about getting nicked for speeding. :?
Any excuses Poon?

Mind you, the funniest thing was when I checked the sellers other items and it turns out that this lady is less than 5 ft tall and is selling a pair of black thigh length boots because they didn't look right on her! If she doesn't sell them, I wonder if she wants to come to the next curry meet?

Origin is GPS based on fixed scamera sites, I got zapped (again) by a laser gun on a tripod by plod who think its better to nick me going about my business rather than the real criminals.

My bloody laser jammer is still in the garage after removing it from the 993.

Poon - did the Origin's laser detector not pick up the signal? Or did it, too late?

Is this right? So Sat Navs and camera detectors dont work with heated screens. I have been looking for one of each for my weekday motor, which has one. (Jag S Type...hangs head in shame) But I have never read this in any of the specs, nor have any of the "Sales advisors" in Halfords etc mentioned this.

Any thoughts?

Most of the GPS devices have an antenna that can be bought separately as an optional extra. The antenna can be routed to the rear parcel shelf where it should work through your rear window or it can be mounted magnetically to the outside of the car.

Thanks, so am I right in thinking that the wider spacing of the elements in a rear screen allow it to work?
