I am currently advertising my 1982 3.0 SC through this website (don't know how to link to it but if you do a search its the only one up at £7995).

Had a phone call from someone saying they are interested and what was my bottom price. I know this goes on because when I recently sold my wife's car thru autotrader we had loads of people texting with low offers or ringing up and saying " we are going to have to travel to see the car so what is your lowest price"

This seems to be the wrong way round to me. It used to be that people looked a t a car and if interested made an offer - or have things changed that much and is that not the norm nowadays?

Would be interested in peoples views/experiences.

Think it's just people trying it on....response should always be along the lines of "well you tell me the most you are prepared to pay & I'll tell you if it's worth my while staying in to see you"...I think genuine serious buyers will usually have a feel for the fair market price for a car....if they haven't at least done that research then they won't be serious.

Peter - your reply should be "£7995"

Selling cars is a hideous experience, either you px with a dealer who does you up like a turkey, or go private with a series of time wasting test-pilots!

When one asks salesmen what their best price is, they sometimes say "if I give you the best price, will you buy it?" which I don't quite understand, but which might work...

My approach if I were in your situation would be to ask them what their budget is, and if that is acceptable to you then say you would accept an offer within their budget so why don't they come and see it, and that you'll negotiate once they've seen it.

Or if you were a BMW dealer, say you would throw in some mats and six months tax.
