Question about lower valve cover...

I'm literally in the middle of refreshing my lower cam/valve cover gasket and I have a question about the valve cover.

Is it ok for the metal inserts to be loose? I'm not talking rattley loose, but certainly able to be pushed out. Or should they be extrememly tight interference fit?

I need some advice before I re-use the cover.

Thanks

Andy

I didn't notice mine being loose, and I did clean it all carefully.

How did you notice, if they are a tight-fit I mean?

Will it matter at all? The gasket needs to be evenly tight, not squashed, so the metal inserts keep the bolts (and therefore the cover and therefore the gasket) at the correct distance from the engine-side smooth machined-surface. :dont know:

Whilst I was cleaning them I just tested to see if you could push them out and some of them moved relatively easily whilst the others seems quite well stuck.

I follow your logic that they are not part of the sealing system, as the gasket seals around them. But I'm sure I read somewhere that people have fitted new covers when the inserts are loose.

On the subject of replacement, I've read a lot about so called warped covers. What is the general consensus of when covers are not fit for purpose and how would one test for this?

I'm confused.

I measured mine for trueness with a ruler. As far as I could tell they were unwarped.

With that many bolt fixing points (12 from memory?) I can't see how it would warp anyway.

Seemed to me like another license to print money, like 'warped brake discs', so I refitted mine. No leaks yet.

The 964 early cars had them made from some magnesium mix and are prone to warping and disintegrating ,my 964 ones were in a bad state and started leaking again after 8 months so I used these from Type 911

Crap old ones
