Just thought I would let you know of my recent experiences trying to buy a 993tt privately.

Having searched the net and all the 911 magazines for more than the last 6 months I was tending to find that the main Porsche dealers (not OPC) tend to charge a 15-20% premium to cover their costs in preparing their cars and profit. Armed with this information I opted to source the car privately and try to save myself a few bob!

The first car I saw looked great, good colour, low miles 97 on a P then I had it inspected... to find out iffy clutch and missing service history and " too many stories" with the whereabouts of the car for 3 years. Someone once told me that as soon as you hear a "STORY" about a car walk away.

The second car I found what a babe! V.low miles P reg and good spec with full main dealer service history except the first 2 years were missing. This is the one!!!

Then came the bad news the car had been re built on a new chasis with the VIN not even there! A non EU car and a list of further defects as long as your arm.

And finally an enormous THANK YOU to Peter Morgan who has probably just saved me best part of £10,000.00 or probably more. Yes more.

So the moral of this, I think, be very wary buying privately and have it checked out. I cant recommend P. Morgan highly for both his quick response, eagle eye and overhaul his knowledge.

Another story that seems to suggest that good cars are becoming harder to find? <warms hands over improving residual>

Hello, I have had four PPI's done on so called good 930's (still looking now) a few hundred spent on a PPI is always money well spent. Better to a lose a few hundred than thousands in the end.

I tried to get Peter Morgan to PPI the car that I eventually bought. He wouldn't travel to Dartford for me. I was a little surprised at this, since his website states that he covers "South and mid-England"...I kind of got the impression he was a little tired of doing so many PPIs... :o

Having said that, he was pleasant and helpful on the phone, and answered my questions about some potential issues I had spotted with the car...

I went back and had another look at the car (armed with a little bit of his knowledge), and bought the car without any professional inspection. It has since cost me a couple of grand to put a few things right (tyres, clutch etc), but these were things I was fully aware of, and there hasn't been any unexpected nasty surprises...

I've just had Peter Morgan PPI'ed a 996 Turbo for me. He was great and very professional, not to mention a very friendly chap to deal with.

The report was detailed but eventually I've decided not to go for it because of the number of owners it has (4 already) (i know i should have found out even before sending Peter in) and the number of small problems it has....

Now the vendor is giving me grief over my deposit! They couldn't understand why i'm not going ahead with it. The simple fact is that i'm not comfortable with the car and that's the end of story. Surely it's within my rights to get a full refund on my deposit??! (They've only had the deposit for 5 days so it's not like i've delayed them selling it!)

ar well. keep fishin'

MOTO your comments:- Surely it's within my rights to get a full refund on my deposit??! (They've only had the deposit for 5 days so it's not like i've delayed them selling it!)

MOTO: don't want to upset you, but the owner has ever right to keep the deposit. Pulling out because the number of owner in my opinion wouldn't warrant a refund!! unless it clearly stated on the receipt refundable deposit.

Moral of story is do not put down deposit unless clearly want to buy and after a PPI inspection!

Josh,

it's the number of owners PLUS all the other small problems it has with it.

The guy did tell me it's a fully refundable deposit over the phone as well.

I had to put a deposit down in order for Peter to carry out a PPI!!

Trust me, i wanted to buy that car!

Hello, I paid out for a PPI on 930 last year the chap asked if he could see it. The report found a few bad points etc, on his car he got the report from me in good faith then said the car was not up for sale anymore.

Very suspect I think would not even offer to pay for half the cost of the report either will never do that again let the seller have my PPI report.

When i bought my first 911 i never had a ppi done - and it was fine - guess im lucky/ jammy.

My 993 i had inspected by the chap who serviced my 3.2, but it certainly wasnt an in depth ppi and that has been fine as well.

Then again the swiss car market is a bit different to the uk market.

good luck to all you guys searching for a car :D

MOTO - New cars have small problems. There is no evidence to suggest that a low owner car is better in any way than one with multiple owners!

They're all fixable small probs but in the end, there're quite a few of them and i'm just not comfortable with it.

ar well.
