Potential turbo issue?

Hi everyone,

Iv been away for 3 weeks and came back this week and have just driven my 997.2 turbo for the first time.

The good news is that it started first time whereas my f80 M3 was totally dead...

The bad news is I'm getting some symptoms that I suspect could be a proper issue.

Iv just driven to the gym and took the long way round to give the car a a proper run with some red line runs to brush off the cobwebs.

First thing I noticed was a faint noise from the rear when getting into early stages of boost, sounds a bit like a dump valve on the cars you see in the films... Carried on driving and found some open roads and the noise is replicated when pushing for full boost.

When pushing for 1 bar of boost with the guage showing, I noticed as it gets into the top end of the rev range the boost guage is dropping off completely then bouncing back and the noise is happening at that point.

Hard to explain really but my uneducated sense is that it's not holding boost from the turbos, I think the noise is coming from the rear passenger side.

No idea what it is or what it could be, any ideas? I'm hoping it's not a dead or dying turbo!

Curious that it's happened after not being driven for 3 weeks?

Any idea what it could be? Or how I could diagnose without having to drive at mental speeds to replicate it?

Thanks ImI, Your use of 'just' sounds reassuring I think...

If it is a sticky actuator is that a trip to the garage or is it something I can try and diagnose and rectify myself?

Not getting any EML or rough running just the odd behaviour and noise on boost

On the drive back from the gym, went back to give it a run at full boost, didn't notice the boost guage drop off at any point this time to the redline... Finding it hard to guage if the car is down on power, it's still pretty rapid...

Then the rest of the journey I put the car into 4th and 5th at 40mph and put my foot down the boost builds slowly but as it's building the noise is more obvious until it reaches about 0.5 bar...

Hard to describe the noise, it's like a whoosh noise but interrupted every second or so and happens at a higher frequency as the boost builds...

I had a look under the car when I got home but to be honest it was dark and absolutely red hot under there so called it a day... Will have a look tomorrow

Any tips on what I need to poke and prod are greatly appreciated

Have a look at all the connections around the y pipe. It could also be a loose boost pipe to intercooler. Best just to pop into an indy shouldn't take them long to diagnose. Ask them to grease the turbo actuators whilst you're there after a long lay off.

Just been under the car, its hammering down but my anxiety about needing a full new engine forced me out there...

The pipes at the top of the engine feel fine, cant see any cracks or tears but doesnt mean there aren't any... Under the car the U pipe from the intercooler to the turbo - the turbo end feels pretty solid, but there is definitely play in the intercooler side, but its almost the same amount of play at both sides of the car which makes me think that's normal. I didnt get the wheel off or the arch liner so didnt get a proper look at if the pipe is seated, but it looks ok just seems to have some play in the connection?

The on the passenger side actuator, managed to get it to move, it definately felt stiff at first and the first movement it did stick at the bottom (on the passenger side) then after moving it back and forth a few times and spraying a bit of WD40 on the bar it started move more freely....

the driver side felt much stiffer, you have to push that one up and at first it didnt feel like it was moving but think it could be becuase i didnt have a good grip. Managed to get it to move up all the way but the return is very slow and needed a prod to come back down... spayed wd40 on it and that has loosened it up a bit but still slow to return...

So suspect you were right IMI it is probably sticky Actuators, will go out for a drive shortly to see if i can still hear the noise at which point ill probably have to take it to Sid to have a look and hopefully its not an expensive fix

Does what i have found so far sound reasonable or am i missing something obvious?

I put my 997.1 into storage winter storage twice, first time one of the arms was stiff and did the same as above. 2nd time the VTG cogs inside on bank 1 semi seized and stripped then selves upon first start up.

Glad i’m not the only one 😂

Now I have a 997.2 Turbo and I’ve just changed the arm rods and lubed them with correct grease.

What is actually stiff though? is it the ball joints holding the little bar or the mechanism its trying to move?

Ant were you getting the same symptoms im getting before you replaced the rods? I can see on mine they do look a little rusty in the middle of the bar but dont see how that would impact the movement?

Just been out for a drive and seems like IMI was right, sticky actuators... Not sure but think moving the actuator bars up and down has freed them up a bit and now the noise I was hearing has gone...

Roads are soaking wet so not managed to test if the car is holding 1bar of boost but did manage to get it up to 1 bar in 2nd gear and third before pooing myself and letting off

Thanks for the steer IMI, lots almost like you have telepathic knowledge of the 911 turbo, appreciate your help
