Possibly the best spec 3.4L 996.1

Thats a great find and great spec.

I understand the need to keep it factory (mines like triggers broom so im in no position to lecture) but Id loose the GT3 badges etc. A pet hate of mine having a car badged as something its not.

The Aerokit also need to be low as well, thats when they really shine. Just nit picking here, great to hear that someone with other 911 experience finds the 996 a great car.

You say it's a C16 car but that underbody build sticker looks like it shows C18 which is a car supplied for Japan in RHD spec.

I think it's the photo. The car is on M030 and sitting just right.

I do expect the badges were by an owner and will therefore get changed, but if they were from dealer as part of a car used to make early GT3 sales, then removing them would hide its weird history. But as I said, I fully expect they'll be going back to Carrera badges.

I can honestly say that if I could only keep one 911, then the longhood and Impact Bumper would go. Aircooled are great cars and experiences, and perfect for weekend drives and short breaks etc, but they can be highly frustrating to live with at times. The 996 allows me to effortless do the one thing I love to do day in day out and doesn't ask much in return.....DRIVE.

Haha, I thought the same when I looked at the photos before seeing the actual car. The paper is bunched up; it does say C16. If you look at the 8 in the 09981 code, you can see how different an 8 digit is. Also it has its Graypaul (RIVERVALE) stamp in its original service book.

Great story and thread. Car looks and sounds fantastic. Well done. Look forward to reading more about the unicorn spec and what you doing with it going forward.

What a great story and even better find! Never seen or heard of one of these before. Well done & thanks for sharing. Agree on 997.2 GT3 shifter and RSS engine mounts. If it was me only other thing I'd do is swap the M030 for Center Gravity's new CGGT set-up. Give it a MUCH better ride for UK roads. I'd probably also get a 997 shift knob as I much prefer the feel (but just nice to have). Like you I'm also a big fan of these cars. With the right tweaks they are amazing :thumb:

Looks beautiful. Have to admit I'm with T8 on the C18 designation looking at the other 8 on the sticker. Is that an issue anyway :?: maybe top up the corrosion protection.

Nice! The early throttle cable cars are very appealing, I also love the 996.1 with aerokit look - it's very elegant.

So... how does your "todo list" look? Engine mounts would be a good place to start :D

Thanks

I've done engine mounts on previous 996.1's. I tried both the RSS and 993 RS style, and it's a great first upgrade I agree, however the car has only done 57k miles and doesn't need them doing quite yet. But I will do them as I agree everyone should - it makes the car feel much tighter, and also can improve the shift.

Other mods:

- Remove the genuine porsche short shift and install a 997.2 GT3 shifter
- Change the 7.5's for 8's
- Add PCCM+

Other than that, it was well maintained by its last owner of 15 years. I will slowly chip through any small details both inside and out.

Sounds like a great car, having a careful previous owner makes a big difference. I'm currently dealing with the effects of my car having owners who did the bare minimum :o

The PCCM+ is a great upgrade, the only downside being then you can't do the GT3 style lower console delete...and it's also a bit expensive :)

The 993 RS style engine mounts are 150 quid from Type911 it's a bit of a no brainer.

Are these aftermarket mount's recommended? Have been looking at them versus the RSS mounts which are 1.more expensive and 2. Read they provide for a less harsh ride quality on UK roads with less NVH? Anyone fitted these ones? Heritage Parts have some at similar price manufactured by Uro. May be exact same ones?

100% it is C16, I have it and the service book in front of me :)

The engine mounts I would go with the RSS style as the build quality felt better and Type911 have a newer brand (Rohler) which is the same as the RSS branded ones for a lot less. They're black instead of the RSS faded purple. The black RSS Style ones are £280 and the URO 993 RS ones with hardware are £190 (links below). That all said, I haven't done a test over years, so hard to say which perform most consistently over time.

There might be marginal increase in noise and vibration over OEM but on a well sorted car it just feels tight from both a handling and shifting perspective.

I got way more vibration from knackered mounts. On one car I could feel the engine swing a millisecond after going around fast corners and almost drag it sideways in the process; it felt like the engine was hanging on bungee cables. Horrific handling until I swapped the mounts.

Other than the 997.2 GT3 shifter and some motul gearbox oil, the best upgrade anyone can do with a car on 100k plus miles, is the mounts. Less than 100k miles, you probably don't need the mounts yet.

I fitted them to my 185,000km turbo and it made a HUGE difference, I can't recommend them highly enough.

The type911 964/993 RS style mounts are almost certainly made by URO.

I'd be very surprised if an OPC would have added GT3 badging to a Carrera under any circumstances and I'm not sure that they could have sourced the parts in March 1999 as the GT3 wasn't launched until 6 months later.

That a very good point. I expect the only item fitted at dealer was the aero kit and possibly the switchable exhaust at a later date?! As I don't think was available March 99 either. Bit of a mystery.

As I say, I'm fully expecting to convert to Carrera badging, but jeez are some of their items expensive. The sill plates alone. Think I'll find some used items from a low mile donor. So far Angus at AMS has been a star with 996 parts I've needed.

So I got a build sheet back, which stated:

09991 XSE + XSF = MUSTEREINBAU!!!

Written in CAPS with exclamation marks. That translates to:

09991 Bucket Seat Left + Bucket Seat Right = SAMPLE INSTALLATION!!!

So apparently the bucket seats were a sample installation, which I assume means they hadn't put buckets in a 996 at factory before that!?

If anyone knows of any earlier cars than Feb '99 with bucket seats, that would be great to know.
