Personal perspective on restored or restomod air cooled Porsches.

Criminal, why retro one of the greatest looking cars of all time, a WB 993 sans spoiler

John should love it. Its got more Carbon on it that you could poke a stick at.. If you look closely at the panels, you can see the carbon weave underneath the paint.
When I first bought the Dark Knight, before it even got the feedback from the workshop on what I'd actually bought, I was convinced it was heading down the retro path. Thankfully the car was rock solid and would have done a disservice to it by changing it up.
The thought of chopping a goog ar up to this level wouldn't be an easy decision for me. What I can do is appreciate the bravery, vision and workmanship to make it what it is.

Is that with yellow tinted glasses?

It might have already been chopped up years ago when the 993 wasn’t all that popular and this is just the latest iteration.

I get twitchy when I see people like Mansory chopping up Rolls Royces but in general I have no issue with modifying cars and If Tuthill had done this no one would say anything.

I’m modifying a 996 and at the moment that’s no big deal, but if they become fashionable in twenty years then people will call me a butcher.

I bought my 993 at the bottom of the market, the 4S never got cheap enough to warrant chopping up. Maybe it was unrecorded accident damaged or just in bad shape generally which would help justify the money spent but I still don’t understand why you would choose a RHD WB to do that, there are so few of them especially manuals (all 4S where manual). Even if this was priced the same as a nice stock 4S I would take the stock car which is why it makes no sense to me………do a singer on a 993 4S keeping the 993 DNA / base styling would be awesome but there is a reason its not been done (see my signature)

In theory yes, but in my experience most specials that are changed significantly from the factory car are a worse product than the original vehicle - unless they’re done by experts like Tuthill, Singer, etc.

Motorbikes are the most common for this, someone takes a decent factory bike and hacks it up into an evil handling monstrosity that is much worse than the original bike.

Id be more than happy with a standard factory restored car and just enjoy driving a classic porsche the way it was intended by the experts, these retro mod's are nice but way over priced and after all still somebody else's vision . i don't think i could see a car like that as being mine.

Err a stock car staying stock! We could run a book on how long it would take you to liberally apply sq metres of Carbonique. Within 1-hour of getting it home is currently at 'evens' on the tote 🙄

If that DAP car was £100k I'd take it otherwise a stock 993 I'm out at over 25 bags

Given I am about half way through my 70th decade, I am open to being called an old f*rt,

I spend many years messing around with my cars and motorcycles trying to make them both look and perform better to my ideals, and within my limited budget, in time I came to prefer originality, a transition that perhaps came into being in my fifties, when the words of my uncle, (former m/cycle racer) came home to roost, in that he determined if I wished for a machine to be faster, handle and brake better, then buy a machine designed to perform precisely like that....all be it an old one in need of repair... I bought a tired out formerly raced 60`s Lotus Elan and spent quite some time performing running repairs at the roadside.... The Lotus was the first of a few old Loti, all of which preceded my rot box 912, the machine that despite it`s close to terminal condition, really turned me into a Porsche fan. For sure my 912 was anything but original, however the quality of the fit and finish shone through all the corrosion issues, and in a way that anyone who spends too much time in the garage working on their sports cars, is bound to come to appreciate... ? (-: Sorry to type, somewhat less so with the water cooled 911 derivatives, as it seems the quality of the fasteners may have suffered at the hands of the cost cutters of the time and perhaps so, right up to the present day..? Thus in terms of originality I am not a pedant, where better quality materials might be utilised to ease future maintenance and maintain appearance relative to actually enjoying adding to the recorded mileage, assuming one is primarilly into driving..?

At the time of the 993 launch I thought it had much cleaner lines than my old SC, less bitty, which would make for a simpler paint job, if and when required that it`s power and handling were improved greatly, in comparison to my then circa 100k mile SC.. However with the passage of time, I now find that I prefer the old G body series with the whale tail (preferably not the Turbo tail) and all it`s fussy bits that seem to make it stand out that bit more... Hmm.

As for the custom Porsche in question, each to their own, though I would prefer an original high quality 993, were I in the market for one...Ideally one that had it`s fuelling systems converted to be E10 compliant...

While I place value on originality, given the likely corrosion possibilities on air cooled Porsches, and their market value, I imagine that the likes of a Rennsport with a more base option spec sheet might be a less risky option when spending circa £100k...on an old 911...?

The classic car market for decades has been populated by folk who mostly will have spent more on their cars than they ever would be worth, and no doubt while telling anyone who might listen... "it is and investment" and so often that they even convinced themselves... (-:

Back to the custom Porsche, I guess it is a case of each to their own, and if someone can perhaps spend £15k on an Austin Seven, then why not a whole lot more on an air cooled Porsche...?

I suspect the potential mistake may be that it seems to be possible to make a car all to precious to be fully enjoyed, again that typed in terms of those who primarily enjoy driving, and who can all too easily fall into that trap..?

I spotted this in the summer - a lovely looking object. I tend to view them as a distillation (of sorts) and closer to art than auto. If I had one, I'd have it to look at rather than use regularly - which would be a bit frustrating.

This vid kinda says it all, and in far less words than I am ever likely to need to use....? (-:
