Just picked up my new 996 Targa - Happy Days :) :)

One option the original owner didn't tick was Park Assist. I called the OPC today and there is no retro fit for this - does anyone know of alternatives, and are they any good?

thanks

I think the only alternative is to park carefully...only aftermarket stuff I've seen looks awful. :)
....Congrats on the new car.

The 996 isn't what you call a big car ... learn to park. Those nobbly park assist things look deadful anyway. And are strictly for girls.

But if you really want them I know someone who's had them retro-fitted (albeit not to a Porsche but I don't think it matters).

one could get insulted with all these comments. Due to forum etiquette I won't swear about slanderous comments on my driving abilities

The reason I was considering Park Assist is that I had it in my BeeM and thought it a good option. Also I've spent shed loads on my dream car - and although I've only owned it a day absolutely love it but don't want some silly mistake ruining it's beautiful lines.

But amongst the abuse there is a strong message - the kits are ugly so will make do without, I'll drive carefully (when I'm going backwards)

Ignore the abuse Andrew, sure its all light-hearted. I wouldn't have explicitly chosen park assist, but it happened to be on the car i bought. I have found it quite useful as its quite hard to judge exactly where that HUGE a$$ is!

I hve to agree with dragon, once you have park assist it makes life so much easier,

Try tying a small child or furry aminal to the back of the car. When you hear the yelp/scream, you know it's time to stop.

That is so cruel, why not just get some nudge bars at the front and back to be on the safe side

The park-assist thing is kinda OK, but the thingies on the PU look awful. Either take care or park by ear; you'll know when you've arrived.

Or you could buy a large sponge and double sided tape and stick it to the bumpers, even springy sponges, therefore when you hit the car in front you would bounce backwards. cool yeah.

Or like we do in Wales, you tie a sheep to the bumper which gives you a loud bleat when you hit the car in front.

I'm obviously of a feminine persuasion. I probably would not have ticked the box if I'd specced the car from new, as I like to think I'm manly enough not to ding it. Admittedly the C4S has a wider beam than the stock 996 and I would'nt be without it now and find it very useful. The Mrs purposefully walks behind the car when we get home and I go into a sh8tfit thinking I'm about to hit something and I'm not even moving!!!. I dont know of any after-market stuff tho

Now sensors on the wheels to avoid curb rash - that WOULD be a real bonus. Most of the time, I have to phone for a taxi to get me to the curb. It saves calling Peter T.

Ive got the awnser, superglue your old tyres to the side walls of your new tyres, hence the Hamlet moment but no wheel scurb :D

And fantastic levels of grip.

Andrew

Congrats on the new motor.

I'm probably in a minority too as I'm also a fan of ParkAssist, and have found it very useful on my last car. I guess you only miss it once you've tried it.
