Did they say what was wrong with it - faulty item or badly fitted?
 
Oil tank filter (not oil filter) had rusted out, as Mark pointed out if you have a few minor services over a number of years for low mileage, the filter is not changed as part of the major service schedule, and it can rust out causing leaking.

Lesson: change your oil tank filter when you change the oil, it's only a tenner.
