Odd oil pressure experience

Had an odd experience while having the car serviced at an Indy (last service 2024). There's a post here.

I have had the 996 from 73000 miles 4 years ago and it's now on 103k (ish). I have always used the standard Porsche recommended oil, Mobil 1 FS 0W40.

My experience with this oil has always been fine, virtually no oil burnt between services (8k miles approx), from some advice here I used my oil pressure to dictate when the car was warmed up fully, the way it worked was, once warm, the revs pretty much matched the oil pressure, so 3000 revs 3 bar etc. On tickover it was always about 1 bar.

Following my service I drove home and noticed very odd oil pressure, it was way higher than I am used to, so i took the car back and asked the indy what oil they had used, for the first time (for an Indy) they had changed the standard 996 oil to Mobil 1 5W50, I asked them to change it and they said they had, driving home the oil pressure was still the same so I guess they just lied.

After some 7 months driving the car like this, it is very odd, oil pressure even when warm is super high, e.g. 2000 revs is just a tad below 4 bar, tickover is a tad above 2 and anything above 2 is between 4 and 5 bar/off the scale.

What do you guys think, should I go back to Mobil 1 FS 0W40 or perhaps stay with the higher viscosity but change to the hartech recommended Millers Nanodrive CFS 10w50 NT?

It won't be doing any damage so don't worry. Is your coolant temp still the same or did you fit a low temp thermostat at the same time?
It could be the pressure sensor but too much of a coincidence I would say.
I'd just leave it, it's still top quality oil just slightly thicker. If you're still concerned change it back to 0W next oil change.

Can't comment on Millers , all I know is any oil is better than none! I always use Mobil

I have exactly the same oil pressure now I'm using 5w50 mobil 1.

2.5 bar at hot idle, and 5 bar above 2kish rpm.

This flavour is oil is actually made from quite a thin base stock with a ton of viscosity index improvers that not only thicken it when cold but are used primarily to keep it thick when it warms up to 100 degrees C.

5w50 is a very wide viscosity range oil and therefore made in this way.

A 5w40 has, ironically, a thicker base oil and less VII is required to make the grade.

The later DFi engines will actually run 10 degrees hotter in oil temps if you use mobil 1 5w50. This is due to the extra work done by the oil pump moving the thicker oil around.

I don't know if this is the same on the M96 since the 996 doesn't have an oil temp gauge.

That said the engine seems to like the 5w50 and doesn't burn any.

However, these wide band oils don't stay in grade for long as the timing chains shear the VII additives down. Best get rid and replace before 5k miles.

You only really need 5w50 if you have starship miles or are doing track work.
