hello....was after some help please on buying my first porsche. Have got about 20K and was after a boxster.

I dont know what to look for in regards to service history and wether the mileage has been altered....does this still happen these days?....I basically dont know much about cars.

Do you also think i should buy from a dealer because of my lack of knowledge??...if so could anyone reccomend a garage?...is it best to buy from from a proper Porsche dealer.

Any advice would be great as im a real car novice......what should 20K get me?

What are the running costs of a boxster....are they reliable?...are they expensive to fix?

Thankyou

I would say, after looking for about 18 months in total for a 993 or Boxster...

Get a 993 !

Nick,

Not an expect on boxsters but have just bought my first Porsche and like you didn't know too much before that. The prices at OPC were a bit out of my range so I used an independant (Autobahn). There are quite a few specialists like these - they will offer a newcomer more peace of mind when spending so much on a car!

Good luck! :D

Nick,

Again like "So Poo" I bought my first Porshce in July and I know next to nothing about any car, so I was very concerned about spending so much. I very nearly bought a car privately but got Peter Morgan to check it out and it was the best £300 I've ever spent as the car had a very hidden and suspicious history.
So I decided to go to a specialist as OPC in London were out of my price bracket. I eventually found mine at Autobahn in Coventry and it's came with a warranty and it's been a dream ever since.
I would seriously try and look for a 993 if you can stretch to it but good luck hunting whatever you go for.

cheers guys but why is a 993 such a better car...this is my first porsche so thought a boxster would be good....i also want a cabrioloet and the 911's dont look as good as a convertible wouldnt you agree.

Is the 993 a better car in general........also liked the idea of buying a more recent car or doesnt this matter.....which one hold the price better......dont think i can stretch financially to a 911 either.....is it more expensive to run too???

IMO, I think the 993 is the best looking 911 ever made, have a look at things like the auto trader a nice 993 will be worth 3-8k more than a 996 that is 3-5 years newer..

I just think the 993 drives the best, you feel that your driving a newer car than one that Porsche stop making near on 10 years ago ! When you see a Boxster you don't think 'nice Porsche' as there are so many around, along with this you know the old saying 'Boxster, a poor man Porsche'!!

As for price- Porsche Made only the 993 for 3.5 years, making them rare.

As for the Boxster (the shape your looking at) was made for 7 years.

I think the 993 should not lose as much as a Boxster, less around, its a 911 and being the last air cooled 911 with that shape, its a classic now, so god knows what it will be in years to come...

The only problem you'll have is finding one, I have had 2 a C2(current) and a C4 in total I looked for 18 months to find them...

Don't worry too much about Mileage, or 5+ owners its the Condtion and History you need to look at.. And remember that your looking at a 10 year old car, so the odd bit of paint work (as longs as its been done well) should not worry you too much..

Hope this helps..

Good luck in whichever you choose, at least you got the right Brand in mind !! (not some Jap sh*t)

Dan

Get a real Porsche mate. A boxster looks no where near as good as 911, no matter how old the 911 is. IMO a Boxster is a wannabe Porsche 911 and doesnt have the same class. Thats one of the reasons I have not bought one. I would rather save my money and get the real deal or get something else.

nick, I don't know very much abou tthe boxster....

however have you also considered a 968 Cabriolet, the car before the boxster ? which should be £10-5k easily..

I think the modern 911 cabs are stunning to look at IMO. I agree however that with previous models, its more a matter of taste. Personally, I love em all.

Errrr yes! Sorry guys, but pre-996 cabs don't do it for me at all.

Also, IMO the Boxster is a damn good car. Not as good as a 911? Maybe, maybe not, but it depends what you want out of driving and ownership. Each to his own. 8)

The 993 is a more quirky old-skool 911- upright screen, floor hinged pedals, dashboard that even the dinosaurs probably felt was a little out of date. But it looks great, is very involving, fast, characterful and well built. Not everyone 'gets' them though, so each to their own as said above.

Worth a look though if you are new to Porsche, you may love it!

The Boxster is a very sweet handling car, I personally found the 2.5 lacking in power, 2.7 much better but the 'S' is the one to go for and should be achieveable in your budget.

Beware of rear main seal leaks, ropey interior trim.

There are a number of good buyers guides about, which i would suggest you have a read of to get informed. Don't be afraid of a private sale, but if you find a good car get it inspected by an expert before parting with the cash.

A specialist purchase will give you more peace of mind and probably a warranty.

Got to agree there - much prefer the 993 coupe or targa to the cab.

first off i take it by big end you mean wide body????.............on the 993 you get C2/C4 narrow bodies and C2S/C4S wide bodies..........and of course the 993tt(twin-turbo) which has also a wide body

as for facelift this is nothing more sinister than the maker (in this case Porsche) updating the interior or exterior or sometimes both without changing the basic shape/structure............
