Manifold stud removal jig?

...you will be lucky I think ...and a couple of of broken ones leads to the world of pain...

Yeah it’s not like they need changing just fancy the stainless manifolds as the rest of the system is stainless. It’s funny, the notes on the history just say “replace manifold gaskets” and “fit new exhaust bolts” no mention of any issues and that was at 62,000miles when she was 12 years old. Think I’ll leave it a alone for time being😅

You could be lucky in that the bolts may have been fitted with a smear of anti sieze compound and they will undo with ease.

You could just try undoing one to see what kind of force is needed.

So I had a good look at mine today, some are bolts and the end ones appear to be nuts on studs is that normal?
I thought of starting to soak them in WD40 but suppose that’s kinda pointless as they’re upside down 😂
Might start trying the odd bolt/nut during this year with a view to fitting new ones next winter. Don’t look great🤔

You just might get lucky with those, at least you can make out the hex shape on most of them! I'm afraid mine would turn to dust if they say me coming!

Perhaps yours have been changed before given they don't look too bad, and the 'nut on stud' fixings?

Yeah the history suggests new gaskets were fitted 12yrs and 30,000 miles ago.

...all bets are off 🤣 I'm absolutely wishing you best but looking like a world of pain to these eyes...

...no I retract my last comment , just taken another look: I'll take a tenner on they're good 👍

😂😂

Have any of you guys ran with a couple snapped and just left them?? Imagining the scenario where they all come out then the last one snaps!!🤨

Do the last one first, then if that comes out you know you're good with the rest! :-) LOL

They don't look great to be fair. Release fluid will do nothing as it can't get to the threads.
One thing I never did was to warm up the engine and then carefully spray the bolt heads with water to try and get them to shrink and possibly help break the bond.
I now use my 3/8" impact gun set up very low for M8 bolts now , just to shock them for a minute or so and then slowly turn it up.

Yeah that was going to be my next question, is it worth doing it warm? Hadn’t thought of using the impact gun🤔 though of course it may just rip the top of the bolt off!🥴

What should they have been torqued too in first place?

A small impact gun (3/8") set on low and just leave it knocking away for a minute might help , certainly I think it's better than twisting it off with a socket on a bar.
Turn the power up slowly but heat it first and try and cool the bolt with water to hopefully shrink it very slightly. They're not torqued that much tbh but where the bolt goes through the manifold , corrosion eats at the part just under the bolt head making it thinner and this is usually where it breaks.

Thanks Uncle Monty👍🏼 read something about just grinding the heads off and then using a stud extractor to get hold as the studs will be a good length, plenty to get hold off (Oo er!)

Stud extractors any good guys? Could still snap further down?

Well the bolt head snap off anyway so you may as well have a go. I tried welding a nut onto the threads and it just broke off further down almost flush with the head which means you can't use that one for the jig.
