I received this e-mail yesterday (not April 1st) from Beatthespeedtrap. I don't know how true it is but it is quite worrying if it's true.

Re: M42 Junctions 3 to 7b Speed Cameras go live TOMORROW

As of tomorrow I have discovered that a new digital automatedtracking system between junctions 3 & 7b on the M42 is scheduledto go live.
There are 276 Digital Cameras which have been set to 2MPHtolerance.
You will not see any flash and the fine is £60 plus 3 points(which could add to over £250 / year to your Insurance).
This information comes to me on good authority but I must stressthat it is un-official.
I hope this email saves you if you have to travel on the M42.

I have had this email too. The variable speed limit is definately in operation on the M42. Be careful!

Are these cameras only operational through road works etc??

If not will camera detectors like the angel or snooper work for this type of speed trap?

If they do i really need to get one of these asap..

Cheers

Rob, the cameras are on the gantries over the motorway in the variable speed limit part of the M40. This is just like on the M25.

All the cameras are marked on my GPS. I don't know if they are digital - they look like the ones on the M25 so a snooper should pick them up.

Basically just obey the speed limit religiously on this bit of the motorway!

Cheers, but are you saying your snooper/ gps does picks up the position of these type of cameras? Can it tell if the cameras are actually on?

Thanks

None of these cameras are legal. They are not clearly identified (yellow backing borads or similar). If you get caught, contest. I have the legislation clause should you need. Just email me.

Mark

The GPS says there are cameras there - no idea if they are on or not. Had another look at them today - they are only marked by the standard white/black speed camera signs.

Sorry not to be able to help more.

Mark - am I not correct in thinking that the Local Authorities legally do not have to identify a speed camera with hi-vis markings - and that this is only done in order to qualify for a government rebate for the camera partnerships ? Or was the Stella Artois responsible if this is a misconception.....?

When my Mrs got done by a hidden mobile i looked in to 'the law' as i fully expected it would be illegal as it was hidden in front of a plain van.

I found that these conditions are all 'guidelines'. Once they get you, as long as they can prove the equipement was corrrectly calibrated, it matters not if they were hiding in a bush, or if there has only ever been a 100% safety record at the chosen spot.

Mark, i too would be interested to hear the details of the legistalation you have found...if only for the inevitable next time i may need it!

Are the M42 cameras not like like the ones on the M25 - ie. variable speed limit which helps traffic flow at busy times? The cameras on the M25 are active only when the variable speed limit is in force, the rest of the time they are inactive.

I drove this section this afternoon and yes, they are in fact Gatsos complete with the target markings on the road. My Origin B2 (which I updated last night) has them on its database and yes, they are active - I saw someone travelling in the opposite direction getting flashed.

If they are illegal, then so are the ones on the southern section of the M25 because the markings are the same.

The most effective cameras I saw today were the SPECS cameras in the roadworks just north of the M6 Toll road. The cameras are painted yellow and almost nobody was going more than 40 mph and without all of the accellerating then braking which goes on with Gatsos, the traffic flowed steadily and progress was actually quicker through the roadworks than when they were doing the M25 widening around Heathrow. A positive use of speed cameras???

Had this conversation last night over a few orange whips too!

Yup they are live! also calibrated to a 2 or 4% tolerance (something like that) They are also on the variable speed indications on the new overhead bridge thingy's. So it can say a number of different speeds so you really do have to watch out!

Oh the joys of motoring :(

You are spot on there - went up to Southport yesterday (on Grand National day) not the best of ideas usually but this section of the M6 was not problem - all three lanes moving at the same steady speed - no lane swapping. Very easy. ONly problem is when the lanes return to the full sizes and 40mph zone goes on for another 600 years. So if you put the speed down too quick you will get caught by the last camera!
