I am in the market for my first 911. Am looking for a 2000 ish model 996. Is it even worth considering a LHD, they are cheaper? can they be converted? or do you lose as much as you save when you sell one?

you buy for less you sell for the same so no loss..

don't bother with a conversion, for what you pay you could buy a RHD..

well worth while but then again a 993 is a better bet... (but you knew I was going to say that anyway!)

If you haven't driven a LHD in UK, then try one first. Some love it (like me) and some hate it (seams like everybody else!). You'll save a bit when you buy but then you sell for less (as Sundeep said) and it'll be more difficult to sell in UK. The conversion is easier than pre 996 911s as they're designed to be either. The money you spend converting it you might as well spend it to buy a RHD to begin with, and you certainly won't get your money back when selling, plus extra loss for having been "hacked". Early 996 are much the same price as late 993, so if the budget is stretching, go for a 993. Totally different cars to drive but great cars non the less. Hang around this site, you'll get lots of info. Other site to look out for is Rennlist.com, American site but wealth of info.

Echo all the above. Don't even think about a conversion - not least because getting hold of all the right wiring is a nightmare (per past article in 911&PW).

As Sundeep said, some like me have no issues with LHD (I've had LHD for over 8 years some of which in Switzerland but the majority in UK). Definitely echo the conversion sentiment. I would say that a converted LHD would actually be worth less on resale that an un-hacked LHD and in terms of vanishing quids, would be only slightly beaten by filling a bucket full of notes and torching them. If you are indifferent to side, then LHD will allow you to buy a better equipped or more recent car for the £ you have at your disposal. In fairness, this gap narrows, the older the car but the point that LHD is a more limited market is true. Best bet is to test both sides and see how you feel. Then set your ideal spec and hunt it down!

I have only had the pleasure of RHD up until now, but the next one (997) is going to be a LHD - I can get either one in Japan - the same price but after driving aroung I have found that I prefer the feel of LHD - yes - no lie - nothing to do with the price - just feels easier to drive for me!
