Is it getting quieter every year?

I’ve never really been into any car/bike scene as such, I was either racing or working and it was just simply not having enough weekends in the year, but I do remember pre-Covid it seemed like there was a lot of drives/events on and I would regularly moan about not having the time to attend, but post-Covid and particularly this year and last year has seemed a lot quieter.

Maybe it’s just a perception thing now I’ve got more time, but it seems to me that there are less organised things happening and it’s just one or two mates going for a drive - it’s probably a lot less hassle.

i think the stress of driving with the number of cameras about has seen a good number of drives off - that along with bloody potholes!

I’m sure sure that’s a factor, the massive persecution of speeding (which to be fair appears to be caused by too many people overestimating their abilities and crashing too much) and the state of the roads.

It seems like a lot of people have switched to bicycles and I’ve got nothing against them, I have a couple myself, but there is something about Lycra that seems to bring out the worst in men over fifty.

I think if I could go back a year or so I’d still have bought my 930 but instead of the RS build I might have bought a Dakar or a Sterrato, which seem much better suited to UK roads.

the dakar is perfection for some roads - they look a proper hoot

Various platforms have become more popular for organising drive outs and meets. Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Tiktok have a greater currency now and these are perhaps the channels of choice rather than motoring forums. I feel like I'm sounding like young Mr Luddite

I agree totally.

I used to organise regular drives out and meetings on 911uk but in the year or so before the pandemic it got very frustrating when I expected 5 cars for a drive out and had booked 20 for breakfast but due to expected attendees mentioning it on social media I ended up leading a 10 car group and having to beg hosts to accommodate 40 people.

Since the pandemic I've relied on social media to advise me of what's happening and pick and choose what I turn up for. Most weekends I just go for an early drive on my own and get home for breakfast.

Dawn or an hour or so after drives at this time of year work best for me in my part of the world, while the tourists are still slumbering, though the roads can be quieter hereabouts at evening meal times or if there might be a significant football game on TV..... Picking the right time can make all the difference when it comes to finding some traffic free Tarmac...

We were just talking about this and I think PCGB sounds interesting. Leisurely drives, talking about nice holiday destinations and the finer things in life, and staying in 5* hotels to rest our old bones in the evening.

I might look out for some of this trips Luddite mentioned.

There have been too many for me to chose from this year, there seems either an organised meet or an impromptu run out every day of the week at this time of year.

I have only got back into Porsche scene after a long period (5-6 years) out. As kids have grown up, left home, I have more time to attend events, I am personally seeing allot less of them. Maybe I am based in the wrong part of the country. ULEZ charging probably doesn’t help! Anyone in the north London area fancy a meet up let me know!

Harry the majority of my PCGB membership involvement was from the seventies through into the 90`s, when I was quite a bit younger as it seems was the membership at the time. We were fortunate in that our Regional Organiser, was a dynamic chap, who seems to have been very much involved in the core of the clubs evolution in the 80`s, and in time created his own group of followers initially Porsche based but encompassing other marques, by way of injecting a bit of dynamism into local classic car events, moving on to encompass an even wider base when organising week long events built around the LM 24 hrs and later to include the LM Classic event...Both of which my good lady and I built into our Summer holidays which included a bit of touring around France.

Over my time on this forum I have enjoyed sharing pics and tales of these past events, and have to admit to being a bit of a CARsonova in that I much preferred the events when they encompassed other marques, as per some of the pics I posted from some of the chateau accommodation that was part of the LM trip packages, a format which it seems others have taken up over the years, as to how well or otherwise they match that which my friend Tony put on.. I do not know, but pretty sure there will be others on this forum who have attended such events in more recent times.. and as such it seems over time and with the "advantages" of social media such events have mushroomed to some extent, varying in type from some of the probable very high cost far travelled events which Mr JWW has posted vids on, through to perhaps more run of the mill gatherings of a few friends arranging something informal..?

I suspect there is rather a wide scope of capabilities both technical and financial across the Porsche community, thus I also suspect it may be down to the case of whatever floats one`s boat, when it comes down to enjoying one`s Porsche and the communities it might afford access to.

When I flick through the pics in the the club magazine, it seems the PCGB has perhaps matured along with it`s membership to some degree, though according to the May edition of Porsche Post, the club mag, I think there may be a drive to introduce some changes within the club structure to some degree..?

No big deal to give it a try, though to turn up and expect to be entertained as such seems unlikely to work, I suspect the more effort one puts in the more returns might be enjoyed...?

I do remember some years back while staying at a very "original" French chateau, that there was an unhappy camper, who thought it should have been five star accommodation, only goes to prove that you can`t please all of the people all of the time..?

Good luck in your choices.

The Ace Cafe, in your neck of the woods? hold a Porsche night on the last Monday of the month throughout the year. 6pm onwards.

I suppose it depends on whether you feel like you’ve got value for money. Staying in a rough French barn is fine if you’re paying rough French barn money, but if it’s a business you’re dealing with rather than a club (who do it for just the benefit of the membership and not for profit), then it’s likely some people may feel that it has been an inequitable exchange of what you’re getting versus the money you’re handing over for it.

Harry, being an old f*rt, and remembering the first ever TV advert for Gibbs SR promising whiter than white teeth..... How does that play in the mind, but my guess is that it sold a lot of toothpaste.. ? (-:

To attend LM for the 24 hrs and have a room in a chateau all seemed a tad special and well out of the norm for a guy who earned his coin wearing overalls, perhaps more so when the owners were French nobility and served breakfast....On the other hand were I used to first class travel and and accommodation paid for by mt employers, then I can see where one`s expectations might be set at a different level... I guess much depends upon how it was advertised in 2002, and whatever picture the advert created in one`s mind, and when it turns out that there is no such thing as whiter than white.... ?

BTW there were a couple of hugely wealthy American guests who seemed to really enjoy the experience, and I now know that they were well used to the best of everything, but had arrived at wealth through hard work, which may have made their expectations a tad more realistic and the priority was related to sponsoring a seat in one of the competing teams....All of which opened doors and added to my enjoyment of everything... (-:

For sure travel companies offering packages of all sorts have sprung up since then, as it seems car clubs may have contracted out that aspect of club what was more usual activities.. One of the car clubs I have been involved with for many years had a member who organised accommodation in cow sheds during the 24 hrs... As ever each to their own... (-: (y)
