insuring mods/factory options (on a 996)

I don't own a Porsche yet but I've been getting a few Insurance quotes for the early 996 C4 I'm planning on getting soon, particularly to check what the effect 18" wheels, sports suspension, PSE and a GT3 aerokit have on the premium if I got a car with some or all of these on.

For the past few years I've always got the best deal from Privilege with my current car (Impreza Turbo), although Tescos have got very close every year, so I phoned Privilege to find out how much more Porsche options cost to insure. I've never insured a car with factory options such as the above so I'm hoping for some advice on how it works with most insurers...

Base quote for stock 1999 C4 manual coupe, value £38k, was £1578 which isn't too bad for aged 30 with 6 points and 3 years NCB, although that includes a £500 voluntary excess.

With the 18" wheels (can you buy a 996 without them?!) and the sports suspension both as factory fitted options, there was no change in the premium, which is great. However if the suspension was fitted afterwards, despite the car being the same, I get to pay £2030, ie £450 more, with an additional £150 excess.

Does everyone work like this, forcing me to only buy a car where the M030 suspension is clearly listed on some factory Document to ensure that they can't wriggle out of any claim I make? I was thinking of buying a car with standard suspension if I couldn't find a car with M030 with the right spec in other areas, and purchase/fit the M030 myself, but not if that's the way Insurance works with options.

Next, I asked for the PSE to be added, stating clearly that there was no bhp gain. This raised the premium to £1852, ie an extra £270, regardless of whether it is factory fitted or not.

Finally I came to the aerokit. Since Privilege wouldn't know a GT3 aerokit if it jumped up and smacked them across the chops I duly stated "bodykit" and the bloke on the other end recommended I should sit down before he read out the quote: £2539, ie £960 more than without it! He did say that part of the reason for the increase is because the kit is worth about £3k. Should I not have said it cost that much?

Any advice or personal experiences greatly appreciated!

I think this is a good reson to buy a C4S - Insurance premiums should be the same as a standard C4 I think and they come with all the extras as standard. Will cost more, but you will get a better resale value so the premium you pay is not wasted ....

Any other sugestions?

LJ

Unfortunately the 996 C4S wasn't available until fairly recently, so the prices are something like £20k above an early 996 C4. The C4S doesn't have the aerokit, but then it doesn't really need it, unlike the rather plain early 996s, IMHO.

I passed a C4S on the drive to work today and, except for the slightly tacky imitation four-pipe chrome covers this one was wearing, it does look great. Hopefully a C4S will be my 2nd Porsche.

I to have been getting Insurance quotes today for a 2000 model C4 . standard car £960 , with GT3 kit it jumps up to a whopping £1620 with the exess beeng £750 for the kit and £500 without the kit. this was also with Privalige aged 34 next month no points or any accidents. tried other online quotes and they are £2000 + for a standard car. Adrian flux come pretty close to £960 but need to confirm with underwriters.

Jay, if you haven't already tried, check out Norwich Union Direct. They beat my Privilege quote by £250 -- £1330 for a stock car, and with £80 less total excess than Privilege. With a GT3 aerokit and 18" wheels there was no extra charge -- after I'd got the guy to clarify that it didn't matter whether they were fitted at the factory or by Porsche at a later date.

With lowered suspension (ie M030) they want an extra £110 (ie £1440) and with sports exhaust added on top of that they want a further £130 (ie £1570), beating Privilege regardless of the mods.
