Instrument backlights / LEDs

great write up Steve.

I've never liked the lighting in those gauges, way too dim.

Once you have these LED's, i take it that you can not dim them? i.e. they ust stay on one brightness level?

Yes, they do still dim. Not as much as the normal lamps, but enough to make a difference.

Tore, You never know, one day I might fancy a nice long drive and a coffee and take you up on your offer!! :D

Have you tried the other fix - a firm but controlled tap to the tacho with the heel of your hand - fixed mine and it hasn't gone again for 2 years!

EDIT: this only works on ones where it has gone dim rather than totally dead! Otherwise, Tore B's guide is a much better bet....![/quote]

Thanks to you and ToreB for the advice. I'll give them both a try!

It will be interesting to see if this also clears up the misting prob also.

Cam, Done over 300 miles since the mod and not once have I seen the tacho mist up. Of course, this could be down to the warmer weather, but looks good so far.

Great that is promising although as you said I think winter will be the test, but we are not far of that kind of weather today in London

Thanks for remembering to post.

Funny I posted a video of two 993 GT2s over in the GT/RS section...

Even on the GT in one shot you can see Tacho is misted up at 1:55

Question,... When you change the instrument clusters bkubs to look brighter and more modern, dont the heater ccu lights look old and yellow and dull compared to the rest of the car?

Yes you are correct, so I changed those as well.

Looks great Steve. My bulbs have arrived so just got to get round to it!

Jeeepers Cripey!!!!! :o :o :o

Warm lights or cool lights, did you see what that guy in the states paid for the twist lock leds?
$150 for 15.
Makes the ones I was selling look like the bargain of the decade.

I have to admit, when I was looking for the LED's with the twist lock bases I bought and tried a lot of different types. I had real trouble finding some that both fitted and looked right. I never ever saw the option of a "warm light" LED.
In the end I had to buy some from a supplier but the minimum order was 250, that's how I come to have some spares to sell on and try to and re-coop the cost of that initial outlay.

Note to self: must read Rennlist more often and review my pricing strategy :chin:

I bought a set of these bargain LEDs from Citori and to my eyes they don't provide a blue tinged light, it is a cool white rather than a warm white, but I like it and wouldn't if it was blueish as it would look very out of place IMO.

Steve, didn't do the heater controls, missed that it would use the same LEDs, is it an easy job?

I also have a set of Citori LEDs in my dash... funnily enough I've not replaced the Tacho... because I couldn't get it out and could not take the wheel off... so just left it there...

And it actually looks pretty cool.. Tacho in warm yellow and all other gauges in LED white. The contrast of the two colours is pretty cool. Actually it would probably look better the other a way around... with your attention being drawn to the tacho in bright LED light and the other gauges in the softer light.

I'll get a pic when I get a chance.

It's not hard TBH. You have to get some single din sized "Radio release keys" (99p from Ebay) and pull the CCU out just far enough that you can up clip the front panel. You will then see the back of the twist bulbs.
I think that Rennlist post shows you this as well.
Remember they are polarity sensitive again. :-)
