I realise this should really be under the 'servicing' heading, but I just thought I had to say something about this guy more generally.
My 993 isn't the best out there 'cos I use it as my daily transportation, but I do like to keep it well serviced. Like many of you with older cars I don't see the value in having an OPC stamp on my service booklet s so I've found a local guy who's now gone independent after having worked for Porsche for many years. He's a one-man-band and, as far as I'm aware, he's not exactly got the recognition that some of the more established Porsche specialists have earned. But this dude is the nuts! I've been using him for servicing over the 3 years that I've owned my car - and he picks it up and drops it back to me all sparking and clean. I think he only charges £35 or £40 an hour BUT he doesn't add phantom time like some garages do. A few months ago. my electric window mechanism fell to bits inside the door, so he picked-up the car early afternoon and dropped it back the following day with the new part fitted for about £85 all in! Then a few days ago my engine sounded like a washing machine with a tin can in it ...a day-and-a-half later it was done, with a new fan bearing hub fitted - plus he changed my ordinary (squeeking) front brake pads for some anti-squeal ones, and charged me £197 for parts & labour (including picking up, car wash and delivery!). I know, without this guy being recognised by the Porsche-owning fraternity, that my car's service history may not stand up too well to outside scrutiny but I'm not too bothered. It's just a reassuring feeling to know that I've got someone who will look after my car without trying to tear the arse out of me every time it has to go in the garage.
So, if there's anyone out there within striking distance of Orpington, you should give Bill Insley a try on 01689 839150.
All the best to y'all.
