Improving a terrible manual 997.1 gear shift.... step by step experience

Hi mate thanks, its a brand new clutch recon im probably just gunning it too quick

so do you think im either releasing clutch too early or riding it that why im getting the smell?
How many miles have you done since the clutch replacement ?
Modern clutch facings can and do smell for longer than the older clutch facings. Once fully bedded in, the smell will disappear.

That is the cable you want to adjust.

The left/right cable is just just the gear stick is aligened in the middle, so when you only push up/down you are going between 3rd and 4th, you have to then move it equal amounts to get to 1st/2nd and the same amount the other way to 5th/6th.

The back and forth will adjust how well it snicks into 2nd. The reason 2nd feels a bit rubbish is the cable has stretched a bit and so by the time you get to max extension you are only just getting it into gear. Shorten it a bit and it will snap in far better, go too far and you will run out of extension for 1st, 3rd and 5th of course though. But it is a balance.

I know there is also some gear wear that doesn't help, but we can ignore that and work with what we have to work with.
Thanks for the nudge here - I repeated the same process for the black cable (move a notch, test, repeat) and managed to improve the shift further.

The change overall is like night and day - well worth the effort. I would say I am back to 95%+.

There is an occasional slight sponginess / resistance that kicks in about half way “down” to 2nd - generally the first shift or two of the day (1st to 2nd) that can be overcome with a slower more deliberate out of first, pause & hold lever to far left, THEN pull down in to 2nd. I’m going for the gearbox mount next at some point - will do another tune up after that.

Good luck to others on this journey

i done the Engine mount change to the 993 RS from Type 911 as well as the Powerflex yellow insert and the gear change feels lovely now.

it was not too bad before as it had the Alex SSK on it.

can fully recommend doing the mods for a nice gear change

My new engine mounts failed in 9 months and 1200 miles!
D911 still not warranted them after about 4 months, so can’t really recommend them as a company I’m afraid.
I’ve now fitted the RSS 624 Road series and they are great. There is a tiny bit more vibration (the 2800rpm thing is real) but they are not harsh and the handling is great. Gearshift is great.

Type 911 is a different company to design 911. i used the 993 RS mounts not the oem replacements. sorry to hear of the issues.

The RSS mounts are very good quality and lots of people use them too.
