Help me choose my next Car

I think the bit where it matters is that it will sharpen up throttle response and make PDK shifts harder/faster, i mean i totally get it the car is brutally fast as it is and the sport button doesnt make it any faster but it should in theory make everything just feel tighter...

Eitherway im happy with the purchase, considdering its one of the cheapest PDK turbo gen2 in the country and has been well cared for means i feel i have bought the right car - even if it is missing chrono

excited now, will probably pick it up next week, its due an oil and brake service so thats being done before i collect

I haven’t owned a Turbo but was interested sometime ago. It was the cost of replacement turbo’s and even spark plug changing that put me off. Is it the 997 turbo that is an engine out job to replace spark plugs? Regardless, it’s a mega job to swap them out. Also I think they’re too fast for the road and the high revving nature of water cooled Porsches makes it nigh on impossible to exploit the performance in the UK. The gearing is too long. Too much power and the lack of drama in delivering performance. Great cars though.

Replacement Turbo's are not crazy expensive, and they are hardly consumable items... Spark plug replacement is a few hours for a home mechanic - although certainly more difficult than on a front engined 4 pot family saloon, but not a mega job.

Think im ok with the cost of replacement turbos - keeping in mind i had been living the last 4 years with a 997.1 3.8 with the looming doom of borescore (luckily no sign of it on my car but who knows what the next year or two would bring!) which would have set me back 10k+ to sort out...

Think the going rate for replacement turbos is about 7k and from what i have read the rest of the engine is pretty reliable... hopefully i wont need the turbos replacing and to be honest suspect that they go when the car is driven like a lunatic which i probably wont do.

One thing i noticed while on the test drive yesterday is that the car is far better behaved and planted than my current C2S, gathers pace much more smoothly, not jittery on the road at pace and didnt have that light feeling at the nose at pace - no idea whether thats to do with the 997.2 turbo or more related to my car maybe needing money spending on sorting a Geo or something?

That's pretty much how Turbo's are to drive, very well planted and very quick.

That’s the 4wd makes a huge difference imo

Well done, like I said 26 years ago once you have had a 911 you always yearn another
I am on my 4th now !

Its really odd isn't it, im not a very showy person so dont think id ever feel comfortable in a ferarri mclaren or lambo - the porsche gives you all of the performance of those cars but without the attention grabbing that you might get. Its just subtly capable machine...

Who knows what comes next after the Turbo, i cant see a need to ever have anything different

I like your style. You wanted a car, saw a car that you liked, bought it! No faffing around kicking tyres and asking endless questions. You just got on with it. Good luck with it, it’s look like a beauty .

Sport Chrono on a 997 and 987 is imho fairly useless, as there isn't even a clock.
You can actually just install the unit without having the chrono function

Thats good of you to say, im a bit impulsive, and only really thought about changing the car a few days ago... initially thought id just sell my C2S over the summer as it wasnt getting much use... But then started looking at what was available... personally think the car i have found is a good deal so thought i might as well bite - whats the worst that could happen (dont answer that)

I remember when i bought my C2S i was part of a BMW forum and had a chat going about buying an old MR2 and doing a 2JZ engine swap as a project, looked at a few donor cars etc then saw the 911 and ended up getting that, so glad i did, would have been a ball ache doing an engine swap and still would have been left with an MR2 even if it had a diff engine...

Is that right? you can have the sport button retro fitted and it does the same thing sports chrono does without the stopwatch? who does that work?

Yes. As FZP said in a few posts earlier.

Likewise for me. These cars aren't anywhere as brash and blingy as a Ferrari or Lambo. These are a gentleman's sports car, a little understated and under the radar but has the credentials to back it up. I tend to feel that people don't hold it against me when pulling out of junctions like I suspect they would with a bright green Lambo and usually they just want to see the car in front of them as they queue through the traffic. A thing of beauty is a joy to all.
