Goodbye to my 911 - but what next?

I have sadly waved goodbye to my 1986 3.2 911 as the pitter patter of tiny feet is imminent. I have about £15k to spend and need an estate. I live in London and keep the car on the street - but make regular forrays to the country for the weekend - oh and my wife insists on an automatic! Any suggestions? I am considering a Subaru Forrester & BMW 3 series Touring.

My only reservation about the 3 is that the boot is actually quite small, and quickly filled up with baby gizmos. Interior space is a bit tight too.

How about an Audi A6 Avant, or a BMW 5 series touring?

Philippa Forresters are good, but watch out for the running costs...

Thanks for the advice Robert - are Subarus high maintenence? Is it frequency of service interval or the cost per service (or both?)

bmw 3 series estate is more like a hatchback.. so not that practical

Subura and Audi offer the best VFM and 4wd

I've heard that parts prices, hence Insurance, are high.

Just cos you are having a baby doesn't mean you need an estate car (remember the bigger the space the more junk you'll simply fill it with. We have a 3 year old and another on the way and the 996 does the job splendidly. I have just invested in some roof bars though.

Met a guy last night who drives a 996tt, had three of them, hes not going to buy any more 911's cos they are now as common as Audi TT's, and the boxster looks the same.

His words not mine, however I do wonder if Porsche are going to regret this huge increase in volume in the long run.

When i was a kid in the 70`s my dad always had 4 door saloons, 4 of us used to go out plus maybe a friend most weekends and we all squeezed in ok.

Why does anyone with a kid or 2 need a bus to drive around in?

Buy a 5 year old mondeo and keep the bulk of ££ for something decent.

If babies are now being born the size of fridge freezers please ignore my comments.

I can only see 1 car that is worth getting.
